Good review. Of course you’ll get a bunch of negative comments from fan boys. I’m still gonna pick this system up. Always loved the Nintendo from the early days. I think it’s funny all these people with their hate on Xbox and PS3. Grow up, children.

Terrible review in all honesty. It was bland at best. Also when he said ugly I almost laughed. The thing is still smaller than the PS3 “super slim” and thankfully it doest have a slide-to-open disc tray. Its minimalistic at best. The editing at the end where he said “no the graphics are not great” was poorly edited too and factually wrong. So far the graphics are on par (for the most part) with the other consoles. When we see more games for it that take advantage of its GPU, things will change

the Vita is going the way of the Neo Geo Pocket Color: a oblong belt buckle and nothing more. Hate to say it because I love my vita, but few games keep me going, and even more are just a huge letdown.

I like TheVerge but this review is terrible. It doesn’t even mention the console functionalities: bc, miiverse..etc

    Josh/Nilay should have reviewed it.

Comments like the following just annoy me:
“It’s kind of huge.…..is kind of ugly” — What console were you comparing with? DS?
“The screen is good, it’s sharp enough..not nearly on the level of the tablet… — The gamepad is a controller and not a tablet.
“Wait and see what MS and Sony .…” — Not even going to touch this one.

What a terrible review! The Wii U is ‘pretty huge’?! Dude, have you not seen the Xbox 360? And the A‑B and X‑Y buttons are the wrong way round? You might want to try looking at the SNES and Gameboy, which came out decades before other consoles which reversed the button formation. Verge, next time try not to let some biased asshole review a product with so much hype around it.

You’re right, it is sad that the Wii U (A current gen console) that got outsold by both of the last gen consoles. I think the wii u has great potential if it has better games and nintendo had a better marketing strategy. And the PS3 did great when it first came out, same for the Wii. I still have hope for the Wii U, but the fact that you are so butthurt and defending the Wii U as if it is putting up any competition right now is very annoying.

@Alinea Euros The xbox 360 outsold it during black friday weekend, the biggest shopping weekend of the year. and continues to do so on a monthly bases along with the ps3. when the Wii came out in 2006 it exploded in sales. Just because a system is new does not mean it will sell poorly. seriously you have no argument here

dude if i remember right both the Wii U AND 3DS didnt get price cuts, so of course the 360 and PS3 sold more during that time, easily logic, however she was comparing it them during their 4–5 months of release in which the Wii U sold more, and even if it didnt get to outsell PS3 and 360, its sells werent that bad.

The Wii U graphics is on par with Xbox 360 and PS3. Wii U can only be called 7.1 gen console. There are some benefits but, aren’t huge like slightly higher frame rates but, you won’t notice that all the time. In comparison, the PS4 and next Xbox will be able to process 3 or 4 TFLOPS which is close to highest performing PC graphics. Wii U is in the GFLOPS range I believe.

Generation refers to time period, not hardware specifications. The Wii U is 8th gen. Whether you think the specs are up to date or not is completely irrelevant.

Also.. an interesting question. I already have a perfectly capable gaming PC. What does the PS4 or Xbox One offer me, that I don’t already have? Now.. what does the Wii U offer me that I don’t already have in comparison? The difference is innovation my friend.

Facts are one thing. Logic is another.

Contrary to what this reviewer says, this console is SMALL. Far smaller than the competition and can fit neatly alongside dvd players without consuming much space. It also runs reassuringly cool.

It’s a great console but there are a few legitimate cons:
I wish the gamepad had a sightly better battery life. There is an official gamepad battery upgrade, which boosts it to up to 8 hours, which should have been default.

No included harddrive. As a heavy user of the eshop I ran out of space very quickly and had to find a harddrive to plug in the back. Not a major issue, I only had to spend a few quid on an external harddrive case, but doesn’t quite feel fully equipped out of the box.

No analogue triggers. Might not affect most games. Indeed, with many games you might be glad they’re digital, but it’s not ideal for racing game and kills any chance of quality HD remake of mario sunshine.

Nintendo has made huge progress with online on the Wii U. They finally have a proper account system and the mii verse is good. But they’re still behind the competition and lack a universal party chat. That said they’re now the only one with subscription free internet services.

The ps4 and xb1 are out now, are more powerful and long term are likely to receive better third party support. They will make more sense to many. The price gap between the far more powerful ps4 and wii u is also reduced if you factor in that you may need to pay for an external hard drive for your wii u.

Ultimately, the wii u is a nicely priced console which will allow you to play the first party Nintendo games that you’ll probably want the console for, as well as a number of great third party games. There have been criticisms of the many ports of old games that come out on the system (People act as if the system would be better if the option of buying them simply wasn’t there) and much has been made of a few bad ports which were inferior to the old ps360 versions, but in most cases the ports are the definitive versions and in many cases are available to pick up very cheap. Many ports also make good use of the gamepad, showing how it can be enhance a wide range of games. It’s also the only next gen console to be backwardly compatible. With the consoles lack of success I do have some big concerns about long term 3rd party support, but right now the Wii U is the only next gen console out there with a good selection of games (Recommend The Wonderful 101 and Wind Waker HD), and throughout 2014 it has a very impressive line up of exclusives.

End of the day If you want the Nintendo games you’ll need a Wii U and that’s a good enough reason to get what has been a very solid and actively used console for me and the gamepad is great.
