During a public event at NASA Headquarters, televised on NASA TV, agency officials and crew members aboard the International Space Station celebrated the one year anniversary of The Mars Curiosity Rover’s landing on Mars and discussed how its activities and other robotic projects are helping prepare for a human mission to Mars and an asteroid.

Question. Jim Green ? Mars is half the size of Earth it might take many years for Rover to discover possible life especially searching in an arrear like in the Saudi Arabian desert which also was once covered under an vast ocean millions of years ago.

Sad to say, I don’t believe any of it. I don’t blame NASA. Our current “leaders” lack the vision and determination to put humans on Mars. Kennedy set the goal and Congress gave NASA a blank check and we put people on the moon 6 times, 40 years ago, with less high tech than in our cell phones. All of NASA constitutes less than 1% of the national budget. You can’t get to Mars on the cheap. I guess we wait for China to get it done. The U.S. has capitulated Space. I mourn our weakness.

mars and earth are the only PLANETS that can sustain life in our solar systems. BUT that doesn’t mean we cant inhabit the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, Which have shown signatures of Prehistoric Earth.

Question for Sigh. If Nasa can process oxygen to breath and energy (by wind turbines) from the Martian atmosphere. Question is there a mission to find deep underground caverns made from Martian ancient streams or volcanic activity etc. which could be sealed and used for natural underground settlements and life ecology (using the available Martian resources mentioned above) and pave the way for outer space terminals for deeper space travel.

It’s only been recently we discovered rare dinosaur bones and fossilized sea life: microbes, plants, insects and animals on Earth millions of years old by cracking open rocks and discovering the remains of dead animals in the form of coal and oil. So will future robots and astronauts be looking for life on Mars billions of years old in this manner by cracking opening rocks etc.?

Seeing that Mars had a magnetic field and is half the size of Earth and Jim Green stating Mars was much more like Earth billions of years ago.
Question for Jim Green. Is this indication that Earth like Mars will eventually lose its magnetic field and its atmosphere will be slowly “Lost in Space”? Like Earth slowly melting ice caps.

    Question for Prasun Desai .

You say we don’t have a good method of landing large things on the surface of Mars like a 2 storey house the equivalent of 40 metric tonnes.

But you have the Space Shuttle or Space Plane which was built for this purpose it can carry payloads up to 20 tones and could be adapted to carry 40 metric tonnes if you increased its width, height or length by 50% or just double its width.

It can do deep space travel and do atmospheric landings by gliding down.

From the photo data from curiosity the Martian surface looks mainly flat with small loose rocks, therefore adapting the space shuttle landing gear and tyres with rough terrain shock absorption should make landing quite safe. Reference YouTube: Monarch Gyrocopter Stop and Drop G — Force Landing Gear and Dunlop Michelin innovating no air bursting? vehicle tyres.

The Space shuttle has an open top for off-loading cargo payloads which could house a smaller return lift off vehicle or return home in the Space Shuttle with horizontal take off back to Earth, using its powerful booster rockets when leaving the Martian atmosphere at say from 200 miles up.

So  why not use the retired Space Shuttle or Space Ship?

     Bart Bols
My comment here was updated based on a recent NASA video 8‑August ‑2014
of NASA building a new type of saucer-shaped vehicle  with Jet Propulsion Laboratory that uses inflation like a balloon with a parachute to slow down larger and heavier  craft payloads instead of just improving on there already Space Shuttle

NASA video showed the new test landing vehicle failed due to its hard to build a very large parachute strong enough and light enough to with stand strong air pressures from landing such large objects like a small ware house.

To me the new idea concept looked like NASA was going backwards instead of forwards, adding to more cost, time and complications? Examples what if, like in the 1st deep spacecraft satellite it could not fully open, what if, Martian air debris or any craft debris strikes the parachute?

When small debris falls of the Space Shuttle like a heat shield it can still land and the heat tile can be easily replaced back, however one slight tear on a parachute and the whole parachute rips apart and its bye, bye or crew saying “Houston we have a problem”.

NASA could test out a retired Space Shuttle fitted with new landing innovative shock absorption landing gear with wheels to match, they could update the (old) glide built Space Shuttle with wing engines to give lift, with reverse thrust for slow down and place side thrust engines for a vertical landing if needed.

They can test the Space Shuttle loaded with heavy weights to test its landing gear to mimic Mars lighter atmosphere and ground terrain landings.

NASA have enough photographs of the Martian terrain to duplicate a suitable heavy  vehicle landing  tests and make the necessary landing gear improvements and the (new) Space Shuttle could  be built to drive around (as well as flying down) to explore different  locations on Mars for broader explorations, especially when its return vehicle fuel will be process there.
