Grow­ing up my par­ents had an old atari, sega gen­e­sis and the orig­i­nal Game­boy. Those were gifts for my sis­ters, and all have crum­bled over the pas­sage of time except for the Game­boy. When I was born they sold some of the old gen­e­sis games for a Nin­ten­do 64 and a crap­py Game­boy SP. We bought the games from block­buster with mon­ey we got from doing yard­work for oth­er peo­ple, and sell­ing apples. When I vis­it­ed my grand­moth­er as a child, she’d watch my father and I play video games for hours, then tell me to let my sib­lings play. Today, my sib­lings have aban­doned the old con­soles for The Xbox One and PS4. They left the old con­soles to me and it’s the only rea­son I dont buy any­thing bet­ter. I feel like a kid, sur­round­ed by my broth­ers and sis­ters, and grand­par­ents when I turn on the Nin­ten­do and watch the logo pop up. It’s like a dis­tant mem­o­ry, or a dream that you control.

My favorite GBA was SP it brings back fun mem­o­ries back in 2003 and ’05 when I play Crash bandi­coot along son­ic ahh good times

I like all Nin­ten­do designs and the game­boy is one of them, but why does the game­boy on the far right, next to the game­boy SP, remind me of a pedometer?

There’s some­thing beau­ti­ful about the sim­plic­i­ty of retro hand­helds. I have a lot of fond mem­o­ries as a real­ly young kid, bor­row­ing my friends’ Game Boys. I nev­er had one of my own but they’re still firm­ly print­ed in my mem­o­ry as some of the most fun I had as a kid. There was noth­ing more excit­ing than catch­ing a Sui­cune for the first time, which became my favorite Poke­mon for years. I’m sur­prised my friend let me play that far on his game lol. I nev­er did beat Crys­tal Ver­sion as a kid, so I’m work­ing on my own playthrough right now. But his­to­ry is repeat­ing itself and I’m still in the mid­dle of it after a month long break. I real­ly should pick it back up! The worst part is the game is so old every­body’s moved on now, so all the mul­ti­play­er fea­tures are irrel­e­vant now. My team is lit­er­al­ly every trade-to-evolve Poke­mon lol… I had to fig­ure out which emu­la­tor would let me have that team and how to get every­thing to work. That was a has­sle to fig­ure out and was noth­ing like the orig­i­nal expe­ri­ence lol.
