During a Digital Learning Network event on May 2, International Space Station Commander Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency shared a musical moment with students in Japan and the Houston, Texas-area. Wakata and the students discussed life and research on the station and played music for each other as the station soared 260 miles over Earth at a speed of 17,500 miles an hour.

It seems to be a universal law, that being a violin player prevents the ability to use a comb… oh and get those kids a treadmill before it’s too late..
We are very proud to have joined in the live broadcast of NASA’s Music in Space event with ISS Commander Koichi Wakata, Astronaut Cady Coleman, Houston Symphony first violinist, Sergei Galperin, NASA DLN Host Patricia Daniel Moore and director/violinist of Bella Gaia Kenji Williams. This was a premium event highlighting how community collaborations in education bring the cultures, successes and stories of human space exploration to life connecting students to an educational environment like none other on — or off the earth. Congratulations to all for a successful show. Our deepest appreciation to all at NASA, ISS Commander Koichi Wakata and JAXA and our Pasadena ISD administration for encouraging educators to guide students to develop a sense of wonder and excitement for exploring and instill in them a desire of passion driven learning. ~ Pearl Hall Elementary Music Specialists: Jami Lupold, Pat Mitchell Surface and Seth Fewell
BTW Our student choir sat down throughout Commander Wakata’s segment. 😉
