From the Batmobile to Knight Rider, self-driving cars have always felt like sci-fi. But really, they’re right around the corner.

Self-driving cars still feel like a sci-fi technology, decades away from reality — but you’d be surprised. A lot of the things we need to put them on the road already exist, and the rest is just around the corner. In this week’s Big Future, we look at just how close we are to a computer-controlled highway, driven less by the human mind and more by 0s and 1s.

Love this series!! Would like to see more about colonizing space 🙂
Third
Best (Video) series from the Verge. Keep up the good work!
Being legally blind and unable to drive, I am counting the hours until I can get a fully autonomous vehicle. It would open up a whole new level of independence to me. Can’t wait. Great stuff as usual, keep up the awesome work.
Strange thing is i just saw that movie Totoro, and the Cat Bus
Nice Graphics And Animations!

Google please redesign your uncool looking car! This looks so bad just like a Mitsu iMiEV.
Wouldn’t cars still need to look like cars to be just as or more gas efficient? If it was pretty much just a box rolling down the street then it wouldnt be as efficient.
I think that I may not even need to make a driver’s license if this keeps up! Yeah technology!
NIce reference to My Neighbour Totoro! And a nice summary of the state of self-driving cars today, but nothing that hasn’t been said before.
1:21 .…DAT FACE
I’m sorry, but I didn’t hear half of what you said :/
Loved the cat bus😀
i solely love these animated series! they are unique and wonderful!
I love how KITT turns into a Ferrari once it crashes 😀
We already have cars that drive themselves on high end cars.
That sort of escalated at the end XD
Make catbus happen!
What a boring future
I love the future!
It’s much harder to get self-driving cars right than “TheVerge” wants us to believe. Read a great article on this recently. In order to get a self-driving car to work properly, it would need a huge database which contains all the relevant information (signs, construction areas). You can’t do all with sensors. Often a sensor can’t differentiate between certain items so the car needs an accurate database which needs to be up-to-date always.
well there goes my dads truck driving job
When I am finished with university a couple of years from now, I will get really angry at the car companies if there isn’t already a self-driving car that I can go to work with every day.
I. don’t. want. to. buy. a. car! period.
This was disappointingly simplistic. There are a lot of technological hurdles remaining which are not discussed.
what kind of software are they using?
Cat Bus @ 2:05! Love the Hayaou Miyazaki reference. Who’s your’e neighbor going to be in 2025? Mine will be Totoro and that cat.
Whoa… The design, animations, art, text, content, narrative, duration… It is so.. Perfect!
TheVerge, you guys are great! (y)
Hayos Catbus was awesome
Hayos Catbus was awesome
at the end there I’m pretty sure you were describing a train…
Gorgeous artwork
@HD i quote “Figuring out who is to blame for accidents is also already taken care of. The ‘driver’, aka, the owner of the car, is always responsible.“
so by your awesome logic, if somebody comes to my house to steal a knife to kill another person im responsible cos the knife belongs to me?
They sound almost like trains only more expensive.
Great video by the way.
I found the voiceover hard to hear in places. You guys may want to tweak the level of the voice vs the rest of the soundtrack, and have it spoken a bit more clearly. Nice animation and concept, though.
PREACH! 🙂
Tesla already has “Auto Pilot”.
How fitting that one of those vehicles is shaped like a coffin. The automobile was in its prime in 1890, 1900, 1910. When it was a luxury for the wealthy alone. When the assembly line was invented by Americans circa 1920s, it was mainstreamed. This wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for exhaust fumes and increased direct and indirect casualties. 1950s, the freeway became commonplace, and suburbia happened. This is where the real issue happened: There are more cars than ever every decade, and people walk even less, to the point where even the liquor store or express market around the corner is considered beyond walking distance. With the habits we form, is it any wonder we fall out of shape the more we cater to them? When all other problems fade, that one will persist. Go to New York City, San Francisco, or Vancouver.
I still feel paranoid when I’m driving despite having a license for years. The Google Gods will rid me of my pitiful worries.
Here’s the thing: owning a car is a pain. it’s a big investment of time and money, and maybe a simpler, easier, cheaper method would be to just “rent” an automatic car from uber to take you where you want to go.
that studio ghibli reference was top notch
damn looks like i’ll have to go back to school. cuz pretty soon i’ll lose my trucking job to a computer.
Controlled cars by distance already exist, the name is JEEP.
cars looks like cars because of aerodynamics and size regulation, i doubt self driving cars will change drastically in terms of looks
