Love the Detours series!!!
Great concept
Good video. I see that Nilay is the executive producer, good title bud!
Looks like a great product trying to assist a great cause. I hope it takes off.
too dope
how do they afford this?
NoahMercy fuck u
@NOAH MERCY
when the guy said “for profit”. just a normal shitty company
i don’t know why but this video had me almost in tears
Glad to see that that people still are helping the poor to make the world a better place.
Thank you The Verge for covering this!
Ladies and gents… this is superb. More please! … (less Nilay ranting on Vergecasts too if that’s OK, ta)
IMO investing/donating in these companies are the best way to help developing countries, not only do they help those countries but they also strengthen and build the industry but also provides new innovative products for developed countries too.
For those “for profit” haters, ask your selves if you would give your life to help the others for absolutely no gain. Sure there are people who would do that but how long can they last, and where do you find so many professionals willing.
Hell I’d buy something like this.
They should do one of those things where say for every two or three of these lanterns sold in developed countries, they’d give one to a developing country. If they’re so cheap then I’m sure us in the first world can afford to pay the extra amount to have more of them donated at no loss to the company.
Amazingly simple & best in class for solar innovation is this lightweight designed waterproof clear folding plastic solar lantern. They are perfect for the masses who are without access to fuel oil. A huge plus for the maker of this product in using their excess profits by investing into other developing energy free generating products for the masses.
did they say how long it takes to charge?
Amazing episode : )
It’s hard to describe what this will mean to the humanity as a whole. Hopefully difficulties of this underdeveloped nations will be overcomed within 2020.
$6-$8 would be more of a fair price for this lamp after looking at components and hundreds of other solar lanterns already available on eBay for half the price of this one.
#respect
This is freaking awesome! I would like to get a couple myself.
How long does the battery last?
Great work.…..
great idea„„,wait to see the price for it!
then these poor people won’t be able to afford it,
just like that idiot that came on TED show and spoke about having a clean water bootle filter which will help people in poor areas.
and when I saw the price it was almost £5000.
A perfect and intelligent solution. Thanks for covering this.
Anyone heard of LuminAID? this product already exists but anything that helps developing countries is good I guess.
Simple yet amazing. I really want make this thing so bad
Another solution to distract people… Many of these people live in rich resources countries and they get a shitty solar lantern. It’s like “hey, take this lantern and forget about the big corporations exploiting your resources!”.
awesome..!!
В результате, богатые заработать снова на бедных и делать себе рекламу и продать акции. И, что бы уменьшить себестоимость продукции, и теперь он будет делать бедным китайцам. Это ужасно, чтобы делать деньги на бедных.
As a result, the rich earn again on the poor and do yourself advertising and sell stocks. And that would reduce the cost of products, and now it will make the poor Chinese. It’s awful to make money on the poor.
Amazing!) This very good idea.

Solar power and batteries are getting cheaper every day. I wonder what developing countries will look like in 2030
