Dolby has a better vision for the future of TV — CES 2015

The TV catchphrase of CES 2015 was high dynamic range, promising better visuals than we’ve ever seen on a screen before. If it sounds familiar, that’s because Dolby started the conversation a year ago — and it’s just the latest way the company is shaping the way we experience entertainment.

(Sponsored by Dolby)
Great video 😀
Did I watch a commercial :p
This looks like a commercial
Hisense products suck!
I’m so not buying TVs for the next 5–7 years. There’s so much that has not become standard that I will not risk my money. DTS X is bringing others stuff too. Who know what will really make it in 3 years. My current Samsung Plasma 1080p looks beautiful anyway.
What was the song playing in the background called?
Exactly right! i want Dolby vision (HDR), don’t care about 4K. well done verge for covering this. No tech sites understand the importance of this technology.
People out there saying there no content for this. Is false.
Films are mostly shot on Arri alexa’s (now days) which have 14 stops of dynamic range. Would just be the case for the studios/ DI to remaster the films for Dolby vision which can be easily done.
Also for films shot on film negative. Film negative have around 12stops to 14stops would just mean again to easily remaster the footage. including old films.
Just a note films are around 2048px resolution output this 4k is nonsense.
Films are filmed at 4k (or in the case of film scanned at 4K) then down-sampled to 2K why? because of the super sample Nyquist theory.
For 4k content to look good you need to film at 8k that only means imax cameras for now, then down sample to 4K.
Another thing i noticed that these Samsung SUHD are around 800nits brightness, Dolby vision is compatible up to 4000 nits.
I think i would wait for brighter TV’s technology not there yet. Samsung dont yet cover 100% the DCI P3 Color gamut yet.
DCI P3 Color gamut is used for film color range (used in cinemas for digital projection at the moment).
The 100% coverage of DCI P3 Color gamut is more important than this 4k.
Not sure how many nits are LG OLED tvs are outputting? also the DCI P3 Color gamut coverage. but would like to see the specs.
You guys can not be serious
HD Ready — Full HD — UHD — FUHD. Maybe in 2020 there will be WTFUHD
No one is supporting Dolby because they’ll charge a royalty on every TV sold.
Dolby is doing something good so The Verge commends them and makes a decent video about them THEY MUST BE PAY AND SPONSORED BY DOLBY
Saying SOURCE: Youtube. is complete bullshit without actually providing a link to the actual source, you might as well have just STOLEN some youtubers video and posted it without their permission for all we know.
Was i the only one distracted by uptown funk???
4k blu-ray for 4k TV is missing at CES 2015.
We all know with the DVD box, mfg’s would rather make more money on new hardware then let you do the same thing on what you already have. For instance the CD ROM, a guy made a device to use a Normal CD stereo which would turn the RCA plugs into video, allowing you to play video from high density CD’s without needing a different type of laser and buying a new box. Then came BluRay, another box for you to buy even though HD DVD was just as good and mfg’s did not need a totally new Blue laser which cost a ton of money in retrofitting the factories to burn the discs. LG had a drive that read both BluRay and HD DVD on your PC, the firmware was on the LG Europe website and American’s could download it to upgrade the Firmware, I did mine. So you had BluRay/DVD and HD DVD all in one small PC drive.
this is actually one of the better videos theverge has produced at CES 2015. Good job!!
I’d like to hear the Verge explain how this isn’t a spot that was paid for by Dolby. Unfortunately they’re heavily moderating the comment section of the article and deleting many posts that pose the question.
Also, work on your diction and enunciation Bryan 😉
song?
I really like the way this guy talks and presents stuff
I had a feeling last year that Dolby future work on sound presentation may have HUGE impact. i took HDR for granted. for now i was wrong. But lets see what other companies do about the sound System Dolby has been pushing since last year.
With Sony going through rough times, they should really join Dolby. It would really help them out and they would be ahead of the competition. They need a big bang for consumers to notice them again.
I stopped listening when Uptown Funk came on.
Looks like some incredible TVs.
i will buy dolby vision. forget hdr.
