The HoloLens is amazing, except when it’s terrible. Here’s our report after spending some time with HoloLens out in Seattle.

Makes sense that when you move your head your won’t be able to see things that you are not looking at.…
Good to know, I feel cheated with having had watched those videos where it seemed your entire field of view was augmented.
Still cool. Though If they don’t change it in the real release ill wait till gen2 comes out or hunt down a cheap used one on eBay when the hype dies down.
Fiction means not real. This is EXACTLY what you were promised Veruca Salt.
Blames M$ for not meeting her fantastical imaginations. Uses a pen and paper to keep notes.
she looks like Dom Esposito’s Sister! =D
When curve display is introduced to this, you will finally get the panoramic you are hoping for.… it will surely come.
Why is this bitch reviewing this like its the final product? It bet everything I own that if this was a project created and headed by Apple she and the rest of the hacks at Verge would be praising it like it healed the sick.
This girl is a typical ISheeeeeep
I have question. You talk about that “Box” in front of you. What would you estimate the full size to be? Compare it to like if you have a tv on the Wall in front of you. Say that you stretch something to fill the entire “box”,is it like 50″ screen two meters away or like 75″ 1 meter away or what is it like?
Hope this isnt confusing and that someone understands what im going for here. (English isnt my native language)
Why advertising ugly woman?
anyone remember “coffee table” by Microsoft? I think 5 years later there will be a real consumer product with better execution of the ideas that become super successful. It just won’t be Microsoft.
The tech is impressive, it’s still a good idea, although it’s really, really a shame that it’s boxed, even more so in such a small box. Sure, the tech has to grow and there’s (almost ?) no doubt it will get better before release, at least I hope so (and if not, honestly I’m not getting one). My main concern (and that’s a huge one imo) is that so far it was always advertised as fully immersive, encompassing your whole field of view, in all those fancy promotional videos. Were they hoping no one would question it ? That everybody would just buy that it does occupy the full width of your field of view ? I have absolutely no doubt about that and I truly despise that. That’s the quickest way to lose the confidence of your customers and to make them think twice or more before throwing your money at it. If you want my trust, my interest and my money, give me honesty. Huge thanks to The Verge staff for bringing us the genuine info.
This makes sense for 1st GEN HoloLens. I would expect 3rd or 4th GEN will be great! As with VR and AR, 1st GEN is well.….1st GEN. In 2020, AR and VR will be ripe enough for everyone to enjoy. For now, it will be the Geeks toy!
AR Pokemon
i would buy that game 😛
apple released a pathetic watch with no use and its a big game changer for verge .if someone other than apple releases something really promising then its total shit
Yup that’s the verge logic
Wow.. That’s awfully harsh, considering it’s still being developed. I’ve never appreciated snooty media brats that have no respect for the unfathomable amount of work that goes into dev’ing something of this caliber.. And testing it.. on hundreds of developers.. 6 months early.
When i watched the improved hololens i knew the verge was goong to attack this. Lol if it aint apple it not good enough.
What a hater.
excellent
True it will be good some day, though I agree with her in the sense that Microsoft oversells things. Why create the illusion that the product works like magic, when it’s still a long way to go? Happened with Natale/Kinect, they make amazing demos and then it falls short which just succeeds in disappointing people. I would go the other way, be more conservative and then blow away people with the actual working of the gadget.
Yup, not perfect. Better give up.
Thanks for the honest impressions! It’s somewhat sad to be brought to reality by stating that MS is promising SciFi but it’s not there “Yet!” But at the same time I share the notion that this is only the beginning and it’s an amazing start, SciFi is now just “Around the Corner” XP
“Holo”
It’s a prototype ‑_- the released one will be better then the one you saw. What you saw was more of a proof of concept then an actual product.
I can’t tell if she is criticizing or hating.
Isnt the hololens supposed to be an AR computer, not a virtual reality device, if so, its more understandable for it to be not as real-feeling or engulfing as, lets say the the oculus rift.
The fact that the hololens was working this well even in its beta stages, sure it has problems but thats what a beta is. This idiot doesn’t even mentioned once that this product is only in a development phase.
She is actually spot on guys.…
She could have went further and explained how choppy the thing is at keeping up with your environment.
The screen is tiny? What a ripoff. I want my money back.
I am willing to bet that the FOV will be increased by its launch. Ever since the last development team could touch it they have added a few new and cool gestures. From what i understand at E3 the FOV was just fine, but maybe people are just so amazing that they don’t notice it.
I think this will either be improved and reaches the ad level, or follows the kinect’s fate. No halfway!
what I heard, fov is equivalent to 19 inch screen desktop.
Listen to this iSheep negative girl :
1- ’ it is supposed to be amazing’
2- ’ it is really terrible’
3- ’ it is semifinished ’ … she admit that
4- ’ it is not how we want to interact with something ’
5- ’ the camera can go through the hologram’ … it is a hologram girl , a hologram
6- ’ you can never belive it is actually there ’ … of course not it is projected picture
7- ’ that all basically is a LIE’
8- ’ if you cant see this … you cant belive in this … then what use this for ’ .… can anyone imagine what this iSHeep is saying
9-’ this is not science fiction yet’… in her mind science fiction is apple logo on a stupid watch
mannn i just wanna know if a hologram would be able to give me a lapdance.
Microsoft should take this product and put it away. I’ve heard a lot of shit from a lot of stupid people. It not good enough for you? Then Microsoft should just stop it all. No one should ever attempt to make it. We should never be given a peek. At science fiction in AR. Everyone is so baffled that such a device could exist they would rather crush it than see it grow. To develop such a device for the first time. FIRST time. People want to talk down about it. Honestly if you thought this device wasn’t going to have a FOV. You are retarded. But really what if all your criticism matter to them? So much so they never release this product and anyone else who would soon never try for the same reason? Would you really be so eager to run your mouth? It’s like a movie that never gets played at theaters because people leaked parts of it early. They ruin it. You fucking ruin it and why??? You should want these glasses to improve! You should be giving Microsoft the best criticism you can give.
It’s kinda like this; you wouldn’t look at the first airplane that the Wright Bros. got to fly and say “it isn’t really a quality airplane!”, it flies and gets man off the ground. Now look after that crappy first plane came the 747 and the Airbus, the Hololens is the first one, Microsoft’s commercial is saying that it is coming; meaning their goal is to get it to that point that the commercial shows. Stay Calm! Tomorrow isn’t here yet.
YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!
i got a new rime… HOLY FUCK YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not an Apple fan or Google fans, But 4 months later, i found Hollolens to be suck, no improvement, and it’s just another kinect, bullshit.
Great Job! I just have a question. If this is so crappy then you can probably make it. Right?
Наверное нехватает привязки на локацию. Правда я мало, что в этом понима, но если привязка осуществляется к твоему дому и расположению подходящих поверхностей…
Thanks for posting this. I was looking for any review which wasn’t video game oriented, or which wasn’t done by a hormone-aggressive teenager, and this one delivered.
Exactly… this thing will be worh buying in 2nd or 3rd gen when they manage to make this work with the full field of view and not only indoor… just imagine a Hololense 2 with a full field of view and working outdoor… you could Play AR shooters in the real world… against AR enemys or against other Hololense players with AR weapons and clothes/armors and so on… this would be great and this could make me Forget about consoles and playing at home 🙂 but this is still a few years away… Hololense 1 is a great concept… but far from good enough for the enduser market.
I was planning to get the development edition but i think ill wait for it to improve.
nice and honest opinion
Anyone else notice at 2:26 when she used a Microsoft promotional vid as an example to prove her “Microsoft is a liar” point. The vid did ACTUALLY depict a limited field of view? You probably didn’t initially notice. Wanna know why? BECAUSE THE FIELD OF VIEW IS NOT THAT BAD! I own one and it is completely fine! It is more than enough to display all the necessary things. You don’t see your periphery in detail anyway. All in all, I would buy this dev unit as a consumer one.
well said
