A May 1 news brief­ing at Kennedy Space Cen­ter in Flori­da, pre­viewed the pad abort test of the SpaceX Crew Drag­on space­craft, sched­uled for no ear­li­er than Wednes­day, May 6. The test at near­by Cape Canaver­al Air Force Sta­tion sim­u­lates an emer­gency abort sit­u­a­tion and eval­u­ates the abil­i­ty of the spacecraft’s sys­tem to car­ry crew mem­bers to safe­ty fol­low­ing a launch abort or a launch pad emer­gency. This capa­bil­i­ty is a crit­i­cal ele­ment for the next gen­er­a­tion of crew space­craft being devel­oped to fly astro­nauts to and from the Inter­na­tion­al Space Station.
