Most of the US is built around the idea that people can hear and understand words that are spoken out loud. Tools like the Eargo hearing aid, motion capture, and closed captions can make the world more inclusive — and accessible.

This is amazing. This completely changed how I perceived deaf people and I am really thankful that The Verge uploaded this video, more of us need to be aware of this!
So is the person they interview deaf?
Nice speech in the end.
verge?
Great video 😊
Oh god, now I’m going to be accused of hearing privilege aswell.

Fiiiiiiiii1iiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrssssssssssttttttttttttt
Great video.
I really hope The Verge doesn’t start rendering the CC into all of therir actual videofiles like they did this time. YouTube accepts custom CC, even in different languages. Maybe also consider, that not everybody speaks the same language?
Check your hearing privilege.
Really interesting! that’s why I like The Verge because they talk about real technology that helps create a better world ^^
Its a She or He?
Very nice work!!
Appreciate that 🙂
***** Thought you might be interested.. Would love to hear your opinion
Great Interviews! Gallaudet University is doing some amazing things!
I just took a tour trip to NYC just weeks ago! 😀
Fantastic video!
“YouTube’s automated system never works.“
Actually it varies, sometimes it’s pretty accurate, other times it’s absolute gibberish, which is why there’s an option to create and over captions manually.
“The voice navigation in your car never works.“
What are you doing, speaking Pig Latin to it? Voice recognition has come a loooong way in the past few years, and continues to improve each year.
“Our society was built with a very specific type of human in mind…
If we want to live in a world that’s for everybody, we’re gonna have to change our mindset.“
I’m sorry, what? What new mindset should we have? Closed Captioning? Sign Language interpreters? Classes for the deaf? Last I checked, we had those things, and they’re getting better. In fact, some people who were totally deaf are getting hearing because of technology.
The world is much more a visual medium than it is an audio medium. Name one thing a blind person can do to interact with the modern world. Listen to a podcast? Well I suppose if they somehow manage to navigate the internet to look it up. They can’t drive, very few businesses have braille pamphlets/menus/etc., and the technology designed to help these people is still in an incredibly early phase.
4:12 can someone help me find that beat?
Would love to see you guys look at the world for the blind as well
I don’t like forced subtitles for English. YouTube allows you to upload an .srt file for subtitles.
eeeh? the close captioning is MUCH BETTER with fansubs works.
not only you got it in nice subtitle but also on background text elements.
anime fansub team is doing that since eons for free (but probably grey is law)
Good video. I would be interested to watch a similar video on The Verge’s take on how technology impacts the visually impaired and blind community.
Would be good to see a follow up story on Cochlear implants.
She is getting very good Verge should make Top shelf a different channel cause the top shelf videos are far more better than the one’s verge does or sam fisher does :p
Excellent video! If you’d like to provide closed captions on the other videos in your channel, 3Play Media offers premium, 99%+ accurate captioning with direct integration with YouTube. Let’s make accessible video a reality!
