Measuring Mars’ Atmospheric Loss
NASA,Mars,MAVEN,Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution
A Nov. 5 NASA science update highlighted data from NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission that has determined the present rate at which Mars’ atmosphere is losing gas to space, via stripping by the solar wind. This loss of gas to space appears to have played a key role in the transition of the Martian climate from an early, warm and wet environment that might have supported surface life to the cold, arid planet we see today.

Poor lady only got to ask one question
Thanks for uploading!
NASA: Why does the solar wind accelerate away from the sun? (Acceleration means that the velocity of the solar wind particles increases with time.) One would assume that the opposite would have been measured: that the sun’s powerful gravity would decelerate the particles.
Eventually this will happen to Earth, it is inevitable. By the looks of it, it wont be in near future, but day will surely come, and that will be end of time as we know it. It is good that we are aware of it, so we have time and chance to prepare.
Some new form of evolution will be required, and we will made it!
Dwayne Brown, for some reason you remind me of a 1980’s movie villain.
can’t understand about 30% of what the colorado university girl is saying … ;/
poor lady didnt get to ask her 2nd question
we should have a moon and mars base =D
Better call a plumber if Mars has an atmospheric leak.
Hey it’s me Mario
#askNASA Given the accuracy of weather prediction on Earth, how do you rate your estimate for Mars atmosphere—Criterion ‘B’ or better…?
Mars!
1) hard to believe ‘devil dust’ from other planets, please say more about this;
2) Sun is born first in Solar system and solar wind exists from beginning of all solar system so Mars can not accumulate enough gas/air to form atmosphere and water on surface from beginning of Mars formation.
3) if Mars has magnetic field like earth and got atmosphere and water on surface and then magnetic field weakened, then atmosphere/water gone so Mars changed from a wet/water planet to current dry planet (this makes more sense), then why Mars magnetic field changed?
Then why would you want to use parachute to land Mars surface, no sense.
what creates a magnetic field? they mentioned Internal heat but how does that work
#askNASA Was the rate of atmosphere loss proportional to its surface area the square of the radius of the atmosphere… What is NASA’s mathematical-model-function of the past 4 Ga…?
Can the Artificial magnetospheres be applied to local protect the atmospheres . like Propose for Spaceships by R.A. Bamford Mini magnetospheres.
so can we colonize mars or not in near future? is that out of the question if we can never restore thick atmosphere?
what about steering few large asteroids into it?
It is not true. 13,000 years ago there was a planetary catastrophe. All the planets were involved. Mars lost its entire lithosphere. What we see from the planet, is only the mantle which froze. The Earth was wrecked too, because it collided with a giant asteroid. The entire surface shows the consequences of this impact event.
so is there ancient life on mars base on the things that you’ve learn so far?
Hi, That’s The Way. recess wail What’s happening, guys.
vm mata a diuma??
This discovery — not the discovery and was late for 35 years. What happened to the atmosphere — this question has already been answered by research satellites of the Soviet Mars‑2 Mars‑3 and Mars‑5 in the 70’s. And then confirmed by the Soviet satellite Phobos‑2 in the 80’s.
Measuring Mars atmospheric loss? This is a make-work project funded by the public, probably with borrowed money. There’s a real human need right here on Earth right now. Let’s spend the money on something useful.
It’s a fantasy.
Venus has no magnetic field… Venus has a huge atmosphere that dwarfs the Earths atmosphere… Venus is over 3 times closer to the Sun and all those Solar Storms!! explain this???
so… mars lost its atmosphere a long time ago, when the sun was more active.
but now mars looses less atmosphere than earth.
using this data, if we make the atmosphere on mars, how fast will it be lost again?
