Stephen Hawking’s Starshot, explained

A bunch of scientists, including Stephen Hawking, want to send a tiny spacecraft to the next closest star using a giant laser. Seriously. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner has already invested $100 million into the project, called Starshot, to see if this type of technology can actually work. Verge science reporter Loren Grush explains.

What kind of sensors are there on that tiny spacecraft. I mean let’s just say one day it reaches that planet/star, what would it do there?
Voyager 1 is not traveling to Alpha Centauri.
how does the spacecraft slow down?
Well now he is dead.
It’s a bit more than 20 years, like 22.5 or so, he says it in his book, page 176. Brief answers to the big questions.
1/5 of the speed of light would be a record. Even 1/50, or 1/500.
What if Martians tried to do this already and microwaved their planet?
Here’s what will happen, our aim will be slightly off and all our probes will slam into Voyager 1
Rest in peace Stephen Hawkins
I want to donate for this mission ?
You could send the probe in a smaller rocket to just outside of earth’s atmosphere.think about it.smaller made, higher velocity, still operational.
why could we add like a sound waves to move away the asteroids during our way so it could helpful .like a small sound system with a medium sized sound wave in case if there’s any kind of xtra terrestrials or like another earth they could pick up the waves even though after a lot of years
Screw money i would rather find other life
If light has a momentum why not use a thin layer solar sail equiped with a kamera a small nuclear generator and an assload of nano leds and let it fly via alpha centaurie? you wont blow of your micro spacecraft with the laser energie and you accelerate much longer
For time binge this is the only way. Maybe in future rocket with extra booster.with human in it.we will human get there. And that’s with rocket. We have to design unique rocket for this mission. I know its its not possible yet.
2021 up date, the sail will be spherical.
after 20 years l will be 46 years old lol , when it starting????? plz tell me
when NASA stat this project?
Video delivery and effects are marvelous. You are great speaker. 👍
It would be propelled 1/20th the speed of light
apparently they are going to send hundreds not just one to counter the hitting dust at high speed and blowing up problem xD
Thanks for your explation!
“It propels the vehicle rapidly through space, or else it gets the hose again. Yes, it will, Precious, it will get the hose.” — Loren Grush, The Verge
This is just to say hello to them. Founder of this red planet. 🔭🙂👍
