Groupon founder Andrew Mason guides Casey Newton through the SF Museum of Modern Art using the latest version of Detour, a platform for building audio tours that now works indoors as well.

Poor tour guides… THEY TOOK YER JOBS!!!
Seriously though, they need to hire Morgan Freeman, Snoop Dogg, Gilbert Gotfried and Patrick Warbuton for their voices. I would pay for that.
Hahahahaha im 4th first
hi
Im so sorry Casey but the best part of the video is the ending 😆
Cool video!👌🏼😎❤️
I’m guessing he’s creating a proof of concept with hopes of acquisition of a VR company and/or the Google(Maps).
By the way, great editing/motion tracking cut at 3:21, nice job Verge editor
Cool concept, could definitely help assuage the massive barrier to entry that a lot of modern art has for audiences without an MFA.
Bonus points for the Ferris Bueller reference
name background song? 🙂
I love the ferris Bueller reference at the end 😊
You just had to do the Ferris Bueller museum bit. Classic!
The perge
Yes, thank you. I was at the Louvre a few years ago and this was my exact thought… those hacked GBA things were sooo clunky.
Ferris Bueller ending was a call that not even the top executives could have made…Whoever had that idea, give that man a promotion!
What a cool app to learn more about the art in a museum. I wish them the best of luck.
Is that guy on the floor dead at 4:05?
I should go
Audio sucks, can’t even watch video…
Someone forgot to grade last shots)))
whoever mixed this audio should be kicked into the street and shot.
Completely unwatchable
look! they both have iphones! of course they do as android people dont really go to museums…
Tone down that ridiculously loud background music. How does that pass any sort of editing process?!
Oops! deployment of the video! You have missed the CC, and the annotations in your CTA off. No point adding this to your vid if you are using it.
This is really cool! Audio tours already exist in museums but the way it tracks you through is awesome. I’m not a fan of audio tours in museums though, I prefer to immerse myself in the artworks and derive my own experience and interpretation from them rather than listen to someone else’s. I would give this a shot though if it expanded to more art galleries.
CASEY IS THE BEST PERSON AT THE VERGE. Nilay, you need to give this man a raise!
Bueller?
Didn’t know Andrew Mason was behind this. We are in such great need of an app like this — glad to see it started in SF — MY CITY! I had first read about you guys on an awesome blog called Upgraded Points. They do a lot of travel hacking and travel advice. A lot of the apps they suggest I knew about (airbnb type companies)… detour though is new to me and I am really excited to check it out when I’m back in the states!
I don’t know if others have pointed out the AUDIO. But I think you should work on it. Bad choice of music, but worst it is drowning the commentator. M2C.
