LG UltraFine 5K Review: 15 Million Pixels!

Hel­lo Mr. Mar­ques, I have a question„„can we do daisy chain with these two 5K mon­i­tors with my 2019 Mac­Book Pro 15 inch.

wait so the mon­i­tor can only work if you have a mac­book pro, bc i have a leno­vo lap­top, but i want to know if i will be able to use it with with my lap­top… O.o

Wait, can’t you use this with Win­dows 10?

how’s the per­for­mance with the 13″ mac­book pro? can it push all those pix­els with its inter­nal graphics?

I got this mon­i­tor a cou­ple of months ago. BEST DAMN MONITOR IVE EVER OWNED. I don’t use it with a Mac­book. I use it with an iMac as a dual mon­i­tor. It’s hands down the most com­pa­ra­ble qual­i­ty to the iMac’s 5k reti­na screen but I think it’s a lit­tle bet­ter even. You can also use it with an iPad pro and it’s very seam­less! If you’re on the Apple ecosys­tem and you need a design­er-lev­el qual­i­ty mon­i­tor, I think there’s no bet­ter com­pe­ti­tion that isn’t $4,000. I can seam­less­ly switch this mon­i­tor from my imac to my Mac­book to my iPad with one usbc cable. It’s legit effortless. 

And to those who are say­ing the bezels are too big, hon­est­ly, I see the bot­tom of the bezels more than I ever stare at the top. I mean, hon­est­ly, how many times do you actu­al­ly sit at your desk and look at the top edge of your mon­i­tor? It’s not the thinnest thing, but my iMac is 10xs ugli­er in that regard and idgaf. I mean the dis­play is so damn good. Who cares about the bezel. MKHBD said it best. After a week you dont notice it any­way. I had a beze­less mon­i­tor from Sam­sung that looked great to flex with on Insta­gram but real­ly it sucked so I returned it. 

My only gripe with this is prob­a­bly the sound qual­i­ty. MKBHD said the sound qual­i­ty is com­pa­ra­ble to an iMacs. I dis­agree. LG Ultra­fine has like no bass. Gives a rather tin­sy kind of lowrange sound. As some­one who edits videos con­stant­ly, I cant stand the sound qual­i­ty. I paired it up with a Bose blue­tooth speak­er and it’s perfect. 

I DO hope that LG might release anoth­er one of these with a XDR Pro type base, instead of the out­dat­ed look­ing pole base. I just hate the way the pole base looks and if your desk is wob­bly, the mon­i­tor will wob­ble a lot since all of its weight is sit­ting on a pole base. I hope they can also make a 32in version. 

I’ve tried and test­ed about 6 mon­i­tors now, all with­in the $500 — 1,000 price range, and I real­ly did­n’t want to shell out so much for a mon­i­tor. But unless you can straight up afford the XDR, this is a great alter­na­tive. If you’re a PC-based video edi­tor, you could com­pare the clar­i­ty to those View­son­ic mon­i­tors, but all of them are mat­te. This one is glossy, but don’t sit in front of a win­dow and you’ll be fine (which you should­n’t any­way because how do you see any­thing? lol)

OMG watch­ing this in June 2020 and the LG 5K2K mon­i­tor has the same prob­lem, it goes dark and back on with­out rea­son. Drove me nuts returned it after 10 days. Why does Apple not pro­duce a nor­mal priced dis­play oth­er then the 6000,- € one… Not a good end user expe­ri­ence.. My beloved Thun­der­bolt Dis­play reached end of life a few months ago. 16” MBP and no exter­nal dis­play to go with it… not buy­ing LG any­more even though the Thun­der­bolt Dis­play had a LG pan­el… come on Apple!!

Great review — I’ve been using a 2K Apple Thun­der­bolt Dis­play for pho­to (Affin­i­ty Pho­to) and video edit­ing (DaVin­ci Resolve) for a cou­ple years with my 2018 6‑core Mac­Book Pro.

I’d like to be able to make use of the sin­gle USB‑C cable to charge my Mac­Book Pro — even while ren­der­ing video. I also need to have 2 or 3 doc­u­ments open on-screen at the same time, when stri­at­ing con­tracts etc. What 27-inch (or larg­er) mon­i­tor would you rec­om­mend that would work for me?

With hes­i­ta­tion because of com­ments about build qual­i­ty for the price, the plas­tic, the bezels, etc, I bought two of these not sure if I would like them. Answer? Hell yes. Went from reg­u­lar office style dual 22” dell mon­i­tors to these and it has been trans­for­ma­tive for me. 

First of all, the plas­tic does look pre­mi­um (for plas­tic). None of that shiny junk. It’s mat­te black. Sec­ond­ly, when you stick 2 huge mon­i­tors in your face, you will not notice the top and bot­tom bezels at all in use. Would be nice for the side bezels to be small­er but hon­est­ly it is not an issue at all for me because nobody spans a sin­gle app across two screens like that so size of bezels is some­thing real­ly nit picky to focus on.

The pan­els them­selves are glo­ri­ous. Hav­ing a glass screen is so much nicer than the typ­i­cal mat­te dis­play. The qual­i­ty of the text and images is out­stand­ing and the real-estate has made work­ing so much eas­i­er because i can have so much on-screen at once with­out switch­ing back and forth. It’s just beau­ti­ful to look at. 

I was debat­ing wait­ing for the rumoured new dis­plays from apple but who knows if/when they will come so I final­ly bit the bul­let and am very sat­is­fied. Just wait­ing on dual mon­i­tor arms now to get them float­ing and reclaim my lim­it­ed desk space.

is there an alter­na­tive of this in 2022?
