It’s sad that peo­ple in the com­ments can’t do nuance. Three things are very clear to me and I would hope we could all agree:
1) Killing the chil­dren was obvi­ous­ly wrong as it is ALWAYS wrong. No jus­ti­fi­ca­tions can be found for that.
2) The fact that these slaves hat­ed white peo­ple in gen­er­al giv­en that all they had known them as was oppres­sors is not a sur­prise. These slaves had been bru­talised by vio­lence from slave own­ers who were white. That this could express itself in indis­crim­i­nate vio­lence against all white peo­ples is also not a sur­prise.
3) This means that the ulti­mate blame for what hap­pened here lies with the slave own­ers. They cre­at­ed a sit­u­a­tion where their own chil­dren were at risk.
So while there can be no “jus­ti­fi­ca­tion” for the killing of the chil­dren, there are “expla­na­tions” for it.
