The 89th Academy Awards was an opportunity for Hollywood’s best to speak out about the political causes that concerned them the most, on the biggest stage possible. But in a time when voters are divided and everyone’s a pundit, it’s easy to forget that the Oscars weren’t always a home to politics. From Marlon Brando to the creators of Moonlight, we take a look at the history of the Oscars as a moving, and sometimes miscalculated, home to political protest. Subscribe:

Its different, speech about politics or about humanity, and please do not package humanity as politics, thats what those news people misled the public and profit from it, the president cry after sandy hook shooting not because he is a democrat but he is a human and he feels deeply that should not have happened. People disgusted about BG massacre not because of party of politics but the notion that no one should lie. It is entirely different.
It is not political comment as there can be no other argument within that forum.
Please make everything political… I just love politics!
WHOS WITH ME?
Sounds… awkward.
ok
Isn’t the Verge about tech??
All I feel like I really see is actors acting. Ideologies being transmitted and absorbed. Hollywood should not have so much power.
rich people from Hollywood telling people how to live there life … yeah sure
I stopped watching (or caring) about these awards shows a long ago. Their political outrage have been superficial and it seems like that hasn’t changed. I’ll start caring when they start caring. Where are the protests and outrage for the way woman and gays are treated in the middle east? As long as they continue to gloss over actual injustices, I’ll continue to gloss over their faux outrage.
this is very good content but I really don’t understand why this was uploaded to the Verge and not Vox
I honestly thought I was watching Vox right before the end of the video
I watched this this morning commented ‘ahh this is one of my favorite Vox videos’ … just realised the verge posted it.
Every actor who is in politics , they will not get my money, I will not pay for their movies.
OMG I LOVE THE OSCARS!!❤️❤️❤️
there is nothing like having a bunch of millionaires whinning and giving life lessons while exchanging golden statues and having a 2000$ dinner
It’s funny that conservatives always insist that celebrities should stay out of politics when they actually elected one as president.
Bunch of losers. We the black, we the gay, we the transgenders. WTF. Not just there movies suck, but there speeches are even worse.
OH THE LEFT…
Hollywood can talk about politics, but just because they have good actors and writers.. doesn’t mean their political view’s smart.
U are idiots. Its not politcal protest, its pretentious rich people trying to tell us what to think and do. And they all are clones of each other with no original ideas or thoughts.
It’s quite interesting how The Verge is shifting more from their general tech discourse to political discourses. Is The Verge becoming more SJW-like? I believe so. Soon I can imagine The Verge as a great pseudo-educational resource for university courses such as media studies, communication studies, political studies, and the alike.
@The Verge … Disappointing video 😒 and boring too, 😴 BECAUSE you don’t include the ACTUAL speeches, ’cause, y’know, that is the ACTUALLY IMPORTANT Content of a video about these speeches. A lesson for you now: a few simple subtitles or card with a paragraph explaining the context instead of this INSIPID piecemeal offering without the speeches would have been really informative. Stop trying to be at the center of your videos. The topic discussed should be at the centre of the video.
I agree that you should shut your pie holes and dance.
