In 1967, Philco-Ford produced a short film exploring what the “Home of the Future” might look like. We re-examine this film to see what they got right about the future — and what was wrong with the past.

They made sure Mom stayed home and had no outside interests.
Didn’t predict the tiny rabbit hutch homes
The only thing missing if the family.
Some of this thay were only off by about 25 or 30 years 😆
I was 21 in 1967 & loved movies about the “near future”, i.e. (far enough away to experience change, but not so
far that I wouldn’t live to see it!) 1950’s & 60’s “Sci-Fi” films predicted vast changes to occur by the 21st Century,
but since we are now 25 years past 1999, other than advances in communication devices, I think that the world
has ultimately failed to live up to those predictions for the future, that were made in 1967, 57 years ago!
They did a pretty good job of predicting.
“hey mom I’m hunr-”
“Did you just Zoom call me from another room to ask for a snack!? Sweetie please just walk 10 feet to the kitchen.”
WTF would you have FOUR FRONT TIRES on a car????? WHAT PURPOSE WOULD THAT SERVE???
Disposable, how selfish and ignorant.
Why are there four terminals that only show pictorial displays rather than digital displays???
Interesting how they saw all this technology but did not see that women would be paying their own bills. I guess the whole social revolution was beyond them then.
Not too far off wow
We have actually regressed. Now people can’t even tell if they are a male or a female. They used to be able to figure it out! I wish we could go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ugh this is now
Crazy to to think that we are almost as far removed in time from 1999 as 1967 was to 1999.
The only difference here is, most of the kids now spend hours and hours on video games, no chores, are spoiled rotten and sass their parents. Parents no longer know how to parent and discipline their kids. Parents feel today they should be friends and NOT parents. Parents need to parent their children. With no discipline, kids turn to gangs, drugs and in many cases become criminals.
In most cases, all this is true today. Remote learning, microwave cooking, prepackaged individual meals in minutes, telecommunicating via cellphone and zoom, auto pay and auto billing, flat screen TV, remote payments. I can hardlt wait to se what our future holds in store in the next 20-plus years.
Pretty amazing stuff. SO, tell me about the world of 2099, when I will be most comfortably resting as compost for worms.
The Mom looks like the actress Marj Dusay in the “Star Trek” (original series) episode “Spock’s Brain.”
They predicted microwave meals; except they are stored in a freezer instead of a computer.
Disposable dishes😂😂😂
This is truncated. Where is the full version?
Funny that they got the hardware mostly right but didn’t realize how much that would change the relationships between men and women…
Did you have too cut off the end credits? That’s important history too!
Made in 1967. Prediction for 1999. Pretty accurate for 2024. Just 25 years off. Not bad.
the biggest invention is actually Windows 7, where multiple windows can all be displayed on one screen. And each of them is running different stuff.
It’s funny how they had no concept of enclosed applications back then, every program was „hardcoded“ on to one specific computer 😆 but still, impressive how most of those predictions remained somewhat true, besides the scales of course. My smartphone takes up less space then a stick of butter and can do all of this and more.
Anyone wanna make predictions of what the world will look like in 2060?
i mean the got a lot right: online school, online shopping, paying bills online, microwaved meals, videochat, heck im counting the chess as a video game,
Its funny how modern women dont want to be traditional wives an take care of their husbands, yet they want for the man to pay for everything in a traditional way 😀
People were doing most of this stuff from home by 1980. Albeit not many people.
Microwave dishes
1967: “i wish i can go to the future“
2024: “i wish i can go to the past”
Hey mom, it’s 1999, you must still be the unpaid servant in charge of filling every whim of the male digestive tract, right?? 1:50
00:56 You flunk! A little harsh.
This was filmed before married women were legally allowed to open bank accounts without their husbands consent or apply for separate credit.
What these futuristic prediction films got very wrong was how gender roles would revolutionize. They assume mom shopped and made lunch. Dad paid the bills and managed the money.
No they did not predict 1999 they predicted the new technology from the 1st of January 2000
The funny thing is they chose to show him flunking, that’s horrible.
They didn’t predict internet pornogrophy though.
I saw a longer version of this video on another YouTube channel.
They predicted these amazing things but not the transformed role of women in society. That was a bridge too far. Mind you we still have a long way to go for true equality.
Thankfully we don’t drive with two extra tires
