The state of self-driving cars: 2018
Self-driving cars,Autonomous cars,CES,Detroit auto show,Ford,Tesla,Cadillac,Waymo,the verge,verge
Autonomous cars are supposed to be right around the corner, right? Well, not exactly. Every year car companies flock to CES and the Detroit Auto Show to show off their cool self-driving car concepts. And while cars are undoubtedly getting smarter, and the technology getting better and better, the day that you’ll be able to buy a self-driving car, or even ride in one, is a lot further out than you probably think. Correction: The drone shot at 3:30 is Philadelphia, PA. not Phoenix, AZ. Thank you Matt McGuffin for the find.

I worry about oneday you want get off the car.The hacker hack your car and say you must pay some bit-coin to him and you can get off…
The 2 fatalities involving self driving vehicles are major concerns. In both cases safety systems were turned off because they impacted the operation of the cars by constantly slowing the cars down. A self driving cars without all of it’s safety systems operating isn’t safe. In the Uber case in AZ an operator was behind the wheel. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/self-driving-uber-suv-safety-features-turned-off-fatal-crash-ntsb/
We live in incredible times.
CRASH.
There must be one central camera connect all cams
Self driving cars are just a excuse for Laziness.
It’s a called NAIAS or North American international Auto Show (in Detroit) not CES. (In Vegas) 2 completely different shows moron
“A lot father of than you think”. You can literally already ride in them in some places. Waymo is partially live in Phoenix (fifth largest city in the us), and plans on going fully public by the end of the year (hail-service).
Their price will never come down.It will always be a commercial vehicle and not for the end consumer.
But sorry I would still prefer to drive my car
What if it gets hacked!?!
I use my car until it hits 300K miles before I think about buying a new one. That’s a 15 years cycle.
still feel this won’t really happen unless liability and ethical issues are resolved. so i don’t think ‘fully’ autonomous cars will be available soon.
Uber had a good run.
What about comma ai?
Some have overblown the advancement a little, but here they obviously are unaware of the exponential growth of tech. Those in the field report tech advancement is not slowing down compared to the last 20 years, and is even speeding up.

Good i want it so press button go to France from england sleep wake up there how cool would that be
Has no one realized that we already have these? Waymo has been doing this with no drivers, for public people for months. The laws are holding them back, but you can drive in one yourself if you are in the areas where Waymo service is available. FYI it is a taxi service: https://youtu.be/kDv3dvBEkwk
Awesome excellent cars of the. Future
These will be the ultimate DWI killer. No wheel means I can sit back in a lounge setting and have a glass of wine.
I don’t wanna sit close to the dash just staring at the bumper ahead if I don’t have to drive. I want a lounge setting where I can watch a show or kick back and take a nap.
The stats are already in do some research. Autopilot tesla numbers reduce accidents by 40%. Luckly the judges have some sense and rule in favor of self-driving company’s.
Super low gas???? Where do you buy gas? The 1980’s????
All we need to do really would be to put the cell phone for map viewing and it will capture images with camera and give feed back to the engine control unit by the cigarette lighter charging cable. Every car can have an auto pilot in 5 years. We can then switch off streetlights to save cities.
The Alberta tarsands are currently producing driverless trucks to move the oil soaked soil to the plant and taking the clean sand back to a dumping area . Jan 2018 The Financial Post quoted “Suncor is building a fleet of 150 driverless trucks that will cut 400 jobs over the next six years. Colby Cosh: The robot’s shadow falls on Fort Mac, bringing layoffs. Autonomous trucks moving quickly to commercial reality despite job threat.” Becoming a reality, the pace of technology is like a grass fire , the larger it gets the faster the rate increases.….….….
unless discipline the nature of the traffic in a sets of rules like autonomous train protocol .
i dont get it.…once it comes out and its 100% street legal and insured and not your problem
who cares
if it gets 1% better nobody is going to shell out another 1000$ to upgrade
you can sell it 1x for a vehicle that will last 20+ years possibly
and as others figure it out its only going to get cheaper
its like trying to make a trillion dollars off of inventing the calculator, and yet today a calculator is like 50 cents
Who will pay for this the millions of poor people that rely on those jobs driving
Sorry I don’t want to share my AMG
I would always want a way to switch a car from self-driving to manual. Would it be possible to keep that capability even while making software updates to the car? Or would I have to refrain from taking the updates so as not to lose the ability to take over control of the car? Also, I would want to be able to change the destination en route, for instance if I forget to take something with me and have to go back home to get it, I wouldn’t want to be stuck in the car all the way to work and then have to go all the way back home to get it, wasting a lot of time.
The narrator says ‘they (self-driving cars) are definitely getting better’ but he is still down on them. If self-driving cars are definitely getting better over time I would be optimistic. How many human drivers are ‘definitely getting better over time’?
At this point in time …17th November 2018 there is no such thing as a 100% totally “thinking” self-driving car.
Not convinced then take a look at the Youtube video entitled: “The Myth of the Self-Driving Car” as stated in Consumer Reports, Auto Test Track October 14th 2018
Without a steering wheel? So we will start allowing robots to make the decision of who dies in extreme situations? Yay!!!!!
Cars on the market with no steering wheel or gas pedal in 2020… that doesn’t seem too far away to me!!! lmao
2:31 when you’re a climate change activist but have trouble holding it in
When you show Pheonix — That is actually Philadelphia.
Trading freedom for “safety” leaves you with nothing in the end. People who buy into these gimmicks will figure that out the hard way.
I don’t expect self driving cars are perfect, as long as their are safer than human driver I will buy one.
“paedos hit the road”?
Instead of wasting money on a vehicle that takes away your control, is tracked all the time, makes you more complacent, and can be disabled remotely without your permission, why not just turn in your license and call a taxi? It is cheaper and more reliable.
So many deaths caused by these things. These are an idea and will never be a reality.
It kind of makes me think of elevators. When elevators 1st came out in late 1800s they where not autonomous and had to have some one operate them. When the automatic Elevators came out in the early 1900s many people thought it was a bad ideal and dangerous. It took almost 50 years before every one was automatic and everyone was okay with the ideal of self operating elevators.
There telling us in the UK that they will be cheaper than petrol cars so who’s lying
I don’t want a driver-less pizza delivery system If I’m paying for it to be delivered I want someone to take it to my door.
SURE — we will have self driving cars much before we have robots that deliver their own babies and suckle their young.…..
“And by 2020, we’ll be seeing cars without steering wheels or padals”
yeah well, how is that working out?
Self driving vehicles should be implemented everywhere around every nation, around every cities, around every regions, around every territories, and around the world.
If the car get patch how the car control herself?
