Grew up in Detroit. 1967 was the begin­ning of the end.

Blacks fail to take respon­si­bil­i­ty up to this day. When immi­grants from oth­er coun­tries move here, they make some­thing of them­selves regard­less of their cir­cum­stances. Ital­ians, Irish, Ger­man, Japan­ese, and many oth­ers faced dis­crim­i­na­tion and still suc­ceed. Until blacks start tak­ing respon­si­bil­i­ty for their actions, they are nev­er going to be suc­cess­ful as a race. Black, father­less thugs make up far to many in that pop­u­la­tion. The pris­ons are over­flow­ing with them. Drugs, gangs, the rap cul­ture, and many oth­er fac­tors are keep­ing the black race down imo and this vic­tom atti­tude is not going to help turn it around.

You omit­ted the actu­al start of it(and the irony involved there­in). There were many “blind pigs” in Detroit—Informal bars & com­mu­ni­ty cen­ters, both black and white, that were used for “pri­vate par­ties”, etc. And yes, the cops were much more inclined to raid the black ones, which is what hap­pened that night. 2 black army vet­er­ans had recent­ly returned(having sur­vived) from their 12 month tour of Viet­nam, and their friends & fam­i­ly were hav­ing a “wel­come home” par­ty for them at one such blind pig. The cops raid­ed the club that night, and began beat­ing and arrest­ing the peo­ple inside, and on this par­tic­u­lar night, the peo­ple decid­ed to fight back, and blacks in the sur­round­ing neigh­bor­hood came out to protest & defend their friends and fam­i­ly, which then grew into a full scale riot and spread fur­ther & fur­ther. The irony is that 2 young black guys man­aged to sur­vive their 12 month tour in Viet­nam, only to come home and be attacked by cops in their own neigh­bor­hood upon their return. Detroit’s history(as racist & seg­re­gat­ed as Birm­ing­ham, Alaba­ma, Lit­tle Rock, Arkansas, etc) made such an evening almost inevitable. Chick­ens com­ing home to roost, indeed. And I say all this as a white guy who was 4 years old at the time in ‘67 and liv­ing on the north­west side of Detroit(Finkell & Out­er Dri­ve), my dad work­ing at the GM build­ing down­town at the time. I’ve heard far too many of my white friends & fam­i­ly over the years, with lit­tle or NO under­stand­ing of their city’s his­to­ry, blame the black folks for that night. That night was a looong time coming….😔🙏🇱🇷

So, the riot was caused by racism? I am so sick to my stom­ach of hear­ing that about every bad event that takes place in this coun­try. Where have all the thinkers gone?

No, white peo­ple had noth­ing to do with the riots. I don’t know why there is this insis­tence that black Amer­i­cans aren’t respon­si­ble for their own behav­ior. By giv­ing peo­ple a pass on their own destruc­tive behav­ior, they are being total­ly patro­n­is­ing. Lib­er­als who say “oh, they can’t help it” and then allow­ing cer­tain groups to act in ways no one else nor­mal­ly would behave, which includes destroy­ing their own local busi­ness­es and burn­ing and destroy­ing their own com­mu­ni­ties, it makes for a peo­ple who feel absolute­ly free and irre­spon­si­ble for their crim­i­nal­i­ty. Of course, there are young peo­ple all over who do stu­pid things out of teen angst, but no group has real­ly been giv­en a pass in the same way.…

Now that blacks have all their rights, they are still fight­ing for their rights. Why? That’s what they do.
