How to pick a gaming laptop
The,Verge
On this week’s show, we look at some of the flashiest floating gadgets we found on Kickstarter (including a nixie clock and light bulb), help you get through the latest Facebook scandal with some emotional tech support (taking your calls!), and look at some of our favorite recent gaming laptops. emotional support request:
why does ‘complicated’ desktop software inherently mean terrible, terrible ui? i’ve been playing with abelton live lite lately and there’s a 0.0001% i’d buy their pricey package because the design is soo bad. the text is tiny everywhere, there’s a dozens of tiny unintuitive buttons with no hover over tooltips, and changing the UI scale is a mess with the window literally extending off the screen with no way to scroll or see what’s now off the screen.
i play a lot of games and every new game is a new software experience and each one teaches you how to use it effectively without the need for a ‘certified trainer network’ and guess what? todays games are not simple affairs. there’s a LOT to learn when completing a game these days.
think about your smartphone today. no one has to teach you how to use it. why? because it works the way humans works, and it’s a continual refinement of matching human behavior to technology. the software technology changes to better match humans, not the other way around.
in order for a piece of software to do amazingly complex things doesn’t mean it necessarily has to be complex to use.
in abelton’s case, making music is supposed to be fun and creative and they suck both out of the experience right after the splash screen.
p.s. — those pocket operators on your wall behind .… want please. send quick. need fun.
I’m watching this to try and convince myself that not all gaming laptops look cheesy and are overpriced because of such cheese
NILAY on crypto and gpu prices: “woah!” “Really?” Jesus Christ, I thought the verge was supposed to be clued up?
is that the guy from the office
Just buy PS4 and download Fortnite for free and get a turtle beach headset 👍🏼 saves money and be happy 😃
People who use Excel with num-pad won’t like a touch sensitive num-pad
I am also an Xbox loyalist. It just plain is a great machine for everything else but games, and I use it a lot more for non game things then for games. Also I use the Kinnect in order to Skype as then the whole family can talk to the other person at once.
SAMSUNG PLEASE DON’t RUIN YOURSELF
Dont
More Stefan. This dude’s the man.
Magnet is a great replacement to divvy as well.
Better hot tip: Use Magnets app on Mac.
Dang, they’ve got the new iMac Pro
Nilay is right, the Samsung “Thing” is uuuuuuugllyyy
No Alienware?
Useless camera!! Throw it away or don’t use it in dim lighting!!
Circuit breaker without Paul Miller is like an iPhone without a great camera. It would theoretically still be good but no no body would care about it.
Those are expensive gaming laptop.…
Can u do a best budget option?
Whaaaat? I’ve missed the show and mr. Paul Miller wasn’t there? Oh no!! That’s how it starts.…
this guy good but these dumb verge f#@!ers dont know how to take an advice.
Holy crap the Mac plug tip BLEW MY MIND
My gaming Laptop Surface Book 2 15 with GTX 1060, that’s pretty nice actually and has amazing other capability’s (Batterie, Display OMG). Except for the price):
PS4 just got better games period. Who cares about the interface.
first guy “I think gaming laptops are thick and studid” DUDE! Thin gaming laptops existed for years now, it’s 2018, wth?
Second guy “gtx 1060 is pretty decent, it allows to play games at medium to high settings” that’s 1050… 1060 allows playing almost all games from high to ultra settings at high framerates.
The black guy seems to be the only one who knows everything he needs to say, the other 2 are just lost and don’t know what’s going on lol. Does this kid have his own channel?
Dislike. The video doesn’t even try to answer “How to pick a gaming laptop” There is one expert talking about a few laptop models and other 2 just listen to what he has so say with seemingly no knowledge about them.
gaming laptop haha
STEP 1 : YOU DONT
STEP 2 : BUY A PC
“The 4k option is only 60Hz…” Just like the 1080p screen, Razer doesn’t sell a high refresh screen option. Also you misspelled “Zyphyrus” (wat?). Which keys are supposed to be used in League of Legends? WASD? “These USB‑C ports don’t carry power, only data”. Hmm nope, they do carry power, it’s just that USB‑C can’t carry as much power as necessary for charging these kind of systems, and it happens with like 99% of gaming machines.
Overall, there are better options. The new MSI GS63 and the Gigabyte Aero 15 and 15x are less expensive (though not really cheap), they’re a bit lighter and have really good battery life considering the power they have (6‑core 8th gen i7). If you want to go even smaller, there’s also the Aero 14, which has “only” a 1050Ti but immense battery and six-cores. Even the “old” Aero 15 comes with a 1070 Max‑Q.
Then, “the Nitro will come with Core i7 and i7 plus”… WHAT? You mean “i9”? “1050Ti kind of a really low power card”… So the cards in a Macbook are like subterranean power or something.
I will say this: I own a Macbook Pro (2014, no dongles, I don’t know what I’ll do when I need a new one), because for work it really is a great option (at least for me) but I know its shortcomings and I although I use a Mac 90% of the time, even I know more about gaming laptops that these so-called “experts”. Like, for real, I watched for 6 minutes and I found a dozen mistakes on what they say, and even some of their personal opinions are borderline ridiculous. C’mon Verge, you can do better! (I hope)
How to pick a gaming laptop: don’t.

how are you going to bring up the stealth and not show the core? laptop buyers should not base their purchase on this.
Cable manegment? 🤣🤣🤣
Most important of all guys make sure the laptop has the fastest ram of 2666mh.
