When choosing a phone case, what’s more important: fashion or function? In this episode of Processor, Dieter invites resident case expert, Ashley Carman, to explore why he cares about his phone case in first place. Then, he shows you how to destroy an iPhone X leather case to get the weathered look he couldn’t find.

So the original title of the video was “The best iPhone case for you” and in my mind the “FOR YOU” was the really important part! I wanted to talk about how your case is a nice way to express your personality and feel pride in something you own, because phones are so impersonal. But I think that was a bad call on my part, the nuance of “For You” wasn’t clear enough. So we’re changing the title in a minute. To be super clear I never meant to have the title not match the content. It just meant something different in my head. <3 you all — Dieter
okay. patina.
“I wanna be individual”… but I have an iPhone 🥺
Funny how you’d get that look after using the case for awhile. but no, Impatient
Lol man said technology can be alienating but also generic and everyone has it 👌

Case expert chimes in with unparalleled knowledge
”If everyone has the same looking phone, every phone looks the same”
Music pauses to accentuate the profound insight
I had the Saddle Brown for my 8 Plus and the Sunset for my current Xs. Both have developed a nice patina on them I have to say if I were to do it again I’d probably just get the black case.
Very cool, thanks for sharing
Verge doesn’t need more videos like this
Cool. I think I’ll wait for my case to develop its own patina. Self determination, isn’t it what this is all about?
Esse vídeo me contemplou MUITO!
You can spit on it if you want to. Can’t make it more personal to case than this.
This was very weird to watch when they showed some commercials on the pixel 3 with the official case, since I’m wathing this video on the exact same setup 😀
You don’t really need to do this I have this case for my 11 Pro Max I watched this video but just decided to wait it out to do it naturally. The patina only took like 2 months
Have you guys heard about this little company called Dbrand?
I searched for how to clean my case, came here 🤦♂️
“-What do you do for a living?
-I’m a phone case expert.“
Humanity is ripe for extinction.
Love it! Totally agree
1:34 “I’m not looking for protection which is probably a mistake”
That’s what she said
I used a sponge and wood cleaner and it looks way better and still have the soft leather touch kinda smells like lemons tho
Like he said…it’s his case so he can do what he wants with it.
You don’t have to apologize for smells in a video. Technology isn’t quite there yet to send that through 😉
I better let the case age by its own because that’s the natural way
Congratulations, you just screwed up that expensive lether case.
What would be really individual is if you threw away your phone.
Why am I sitting here watching a video about two grown adults discussing a phone case…
Didn’t Ashley tell you to lose the undershirt…it’s a fashion no no!
just got this case and i did what you did to make it look more worn out. i absolutely love how it looks now. before it was too orange for my taste
correct title: “how to ruin your leather iphone case”
So Good Man!
If you are walking around in life and this is your internal dialogue..you my friend have lost your mind
This was beautiful ❤️
The bad news: Mine did not come out nearly this good. Maybe iphone 12 cases are different. Maybe I just sanded differently
The good news: It did not smell bad at all, it smelled WONDERFUL. Coconut oil smells great.
I’m wondering what grade of grit sandpaper you used? and if you even used the 2nd one?
I was actually a little afraid of buying the saddle brown case but I did it anyone (because it had a 15% discount on Amazon) and now I’m just trying to let it get there through regular use.
All I hope is that it won’t get discolored by blue jeans or whatever.
This is, throughout the years, my third leather case. Had a Product Red one for my 5S and a black one for my 6 Plus.
I actually bought the black as the second case because I didn’t like the discoloration on the red one. Now I think a little differently about it and I’m just curious how it’s gonna develop over time. I mean, it does have a color that’s similar to the original color of my favorite leather belt and that has darkened and stained a lot.
4:16 I LAUGHED MORE THAN I SHOULD HAVE
Great video. Can I do this with the black leather case?
Verge is so feminine
What kind of person buys sandpaper from Walgreens?
I come back to this video every year. Probably my favorite Deiter.
I’d rather let it patinate on its own, with time and natural wear and tear from my own handling..that Would make it feel truly personal
I thought I was the only one that loved worn leather cases. Here is a tip. Use mink oil and just rub it until it gets dark. No need to sand it. I do the same with new leather shoes.
If you want to speed up a patina on your iPhone case rub it down every so often with something with a low alcohol content, the case comes with a coating on it that prevents the patina from forming evenly and quickly…. Once it’s gone it will form a natural patina over time without sanding
Case expert😂
Rubbing alcohol to remove the finish, then leather conditioner and/or shoe polish in the right colour.
doing that to “fine woven”
Does this improved the grip too? Brand new leather cases are slipper.
A word of advice: DO NOT do this.
Let your phone case patina naturally over time.
You will hate the end-result of this sand paper technique.
