RED Hydrogen One hands-on

The Hydrogen One is a modular Android phone with aspirations to be so much more. RED wants you to attach DSLR lenses, look at holograms, and attach it to its incredible 4K cameras. It’s no wonder it’s so big: it’s full of wild ideas.

What is the most interesting feature of the Hydrogen One to you? — Dieter
“it is actually kind of impressive”
show us the front 🙁
More like hands off
A la verge, nice phone. China copying in 3, 2, 1..
is there anyone who ever seen its front screen???
If the camera on the phone itself isn’t spectacular then I’d have absolutely no interest. The idea of connecting a lease to it sounds cool until you actually have to collect a lense to it 🤔. If you’re going to have to buy a $1200 phone and carry a bag around with expensive lenses that’s kinda a fail cause you could just buy a camera for a couple hundred dollars 🤷🏾♂️
Just saw a Russian dude show the front. It has two speakers. And one camera is on the upper left side. And the other one is on the upper right side.
‘It’s gonna be a buncha money’…ah, American journalism at its most eloquent 😣
Nah don’t trust RED they should stick to cameras
Vaporware
I want this phone but the camera module wont work with a DJI Osmo 🙁
Does this phone record in 8K?
And he didn’t mention ANYTHING about the quality of the camera inside the phone. 8K? 4K? What is it. And this is built by RED, an elite camera company. Go figure.
so what you have not said is “if you want a camera you must spend additional funds and buy a camera mod to clip on to that phone”.
So it’s not a hologram, but rather 3D like the Nintendo 3DS, or the HTC EVO 4G LTE 3D (with its stupid all-caps name)?
Does it film in raw?
I saw in foxconn open house that there will be an amazing 3d feature. A lot of other things I probably am not supposed to tell everyone about, but it will be really interesting!
Everyone’s freaking out because Red won’t allow photos of the front- pretty Easy to understand why not if you try; the display produced cannot be photographed the way it looks to the eye, at least not with current cam tech, so it wouldn’t be an accurate representation of the reality of the display, and nobody would understand what it does.
Keep talking. Another review reader. I can read it myself
I think one of the reasons they don’t show the front is
1. Recording a hologram with a camera would look a bit weird.
2. They want to keep it as a surprise I assume.
3. I don’t know.
when is the release of the final product ? thanks 😁
By the time this is released Apple and Samsung will be so far ahead in terms of specs. Basically, this phone will be for those who are really into photography/videography. The issue is Apple and Samsung cameras will be slightly worse but overall MUCH better value for money. This seems like its going to be a powerful camera 1st and a smartphone 2nd.
Fair Phone is better.
#1 It has more modules
#2 Can be easier to repair if needed
#3 is cheaper at about half the cost
#4 Parts can be swapped and upgraded
Funny how this is The Verge’s worst produced videos
So not true hologram tech?
This will flop, like IMMEDIATELY. This holo screen that we cant even be shown yet sounds cool and all, but this is also a smartphone. And if the specs of this smartphone sucks and still has premium pricing, nobody is going to buy it. Sure, my note 8 may not have a lenticular display or that super crazy camera, but honestly, nobody cares. I can get much more functionality and power in the end than the red hydrogen one, for MUCH less. This has no place in the market asides from being a niche little toy.
SD 835 in 2018?
Not cool RED!
Its a fugly design..Red this is a overpriced niche product that wont win you fans and youd better hope thw Camera holds up vs the others heavy hitters Sammy Apple and Google Pixel out there with that price tag you slapped on the Hydrogen.
Good information but you didn’t show us the titanium ?!!!
disappointed this guy can’t show front
I hope its 8k
If it’s not an iPhone I don’t want it
Awesome
Really charging 1500 dollars for a phone the only thing good is the camera and they overpriced it smh this thing is a failure from the beginning just stick with the cameras dudes
when?!?!
Man… you going to review a Jim Jannard product and wearing RayBan instead of some cool Oakley’s he made.…
What about don’t show the front?
Why can only crazy people buy this phone? I’m willing to buy this to test out its camera no matter how much it is
I saw like 3 videos and still don’t understand how is this phone different from other phones
So if u take a pic with it and send it to someone else that doesn’t have this phone its gonna look tarded
“i cant show you the front”
Me: *Exists Video
Weapon? Did he just say weapon?
motomoda
I picked up a brand new RED Hydrogen, traded it for my Samsung Galaxy Note 8s I’m returning it tomorrow and getting my Galaxy back!It has like a 2014 bottom of the line Android platform,The built in speakers sound so tinny,And has no power, especially if you put earbuds or headphones in, Horrible, like it’s turned down to medium volume on my Galaxy,. It has that cool hologram effect, when looking at apps that coencide with the Red Hydrogen, and only takes ‚Regular pictures, and video, and are not what I expected from a Camera company phone..That cost $1,400!Its supposed to be high grade titanium,it feels like hardened plastic.. Horrible phone!!
