Amazon announced plans in November for a $2 billion headquarters in New York’s Long Island City, also known as HQ2. Almost from the beginning, New Yorkers were skeptical. In the days after the deal was announced, there were a ton of protests. But three months later, the company is abruptly pulling out, chased out by local activists and politicians. How did it go so wrong so fast?

So what do you think, were New Yorkers right to chase Amazon out?
The impact of highly paid tech workers in the San Francisco Bay area has had a profoundly adverse effect on the general population. Rents are now sky high and many people are being forced to work two jobs, while others are living in converted, unheated garages. More still are packing up and leaving. Everyday folks with normal, non tech jobs simply can’t compete with workers making six figure salaries. That goes double with double income couples.
Why are the comments all the same hostility towards the verge? They are all most all the same comment too. What’s going on?
Why is this video downvoted? I haven’t heard about this amazon new york issue before that. I’m from Eastern Europe.
its actually Headquarters with an ! (exclamation point)
AVOCADOS???
I think new yorkers made a mistake .
Amazon created jobs in the states where it set up their business , just like Walmart and many other companies.
I’m proud that my NYC said no to Amazons bs scam. Here we thought, were inspired by amazons plan to revitalize a city that really needed it. Turns out that wasn’t amazons plan after all. They could have picked Newark or Baltimore and we would have been happy.
I’m new here wtf is going on in the comment section someone spill the tea ☕️ LOL
In the future typing this comment. I sense Amazon might be bankrupt soon.
Can I buy NO AMAZON sticker from Amazon?
I’m lost. Where is the hate coming from?
New York City has become the largest landfill on Earth
Democrats rejected Amazon. Not New Yorkers. More jobs and money for another state.
It’s like a deal with the devil, you’ll get what you want but your soul is the currency exchange, unless you know for a fact that your soul is not ” yours” to begin with.
Those 3 billions weren’t going to be a check, but tax insensitives😂😂😂
This explains why the huge Amazon Warehouse Fires occurred. It was the Democrat bullies!
democratic success
I know I am a year late, but this topic still interests me because NYC considers this a win. Who doesn’t consider it a win is all the local businesses that saw tons of money coming into their business only to see it fade away when the local politicians poo-pooed the model. I still don’t know why they consider it a win. It seems to me if you loved there and owned property, raising the value and bringing jobs to the area is a good thing. Today, I know that they regret that decision with all the people leaving NYC. Today, I would think, they would be happy to have all that money coming into the city instead of going out of the city, but that is the bigger picture. All the locals could not see it a year ago.
Today, most of the businesses I worked with are leaving NYC. Why do you think that is? Are those politicians happy now?
That would’ve beautified the area more so. As far as rent pretty much all of area is is luxury buildings so the rent is high anyway.
too bad we need it rn in nyc

This is all AOC and his follower fault, because they believe it was a corporate greed, even though they want to make new 25- 30000 jobs
The negative of having Amazon HQ is over exaggerated . This was really blow up for the New York city. It should have been worked out.
Tech companies don’t bring in good paying jobs for the average worker. These are higher paying jobs for the college educated professional worker. When a tech company moves in housing gets expensive and neighborhoods are gentrified pushing out the middle and lower middle class. San Jose is probably one of the richest cities in America because of tech companies but the gap between the rich and poor is wide. They were right rejecting Amazon in NYC. Why do you think Seattle housing is expensive?
Amazon isn’t going to play “fair” and cater to progressive whims when there are other places all too happy to cut a deal and abide by it. NY overplayed its hand and their bluff was called. Bullet dodged, by Bezos. I’m all for corporations and governments trying to correct income inequality and its related issues but the devil is in the details as to HOW you get there without draconian measures that kill the goose in the process. NY isn’t the only game in town and needs to clean up its own act.
