The Kingrow K1 is one of the most unusual smartphones I’ve ever featured on Unbox Therapy. It’s the first e‑ink smartphone I’ve ever used and the experience is quite bizarre. So what’s the deal? Does an e‑ink smartphone make any sense?

The Hisense phones have much faster refresh rates, but US tech and telecom have undermined their ability to work in the US.
E‑ink is the best… there is even new color e‑ink.
It’s the display had a faster refresh, i would but one today
I’d buy one just for the eye comfort. But wish there was color version.
It is great for detoxing from a smartphone.
Just turn on monochrome in developer option.
Doing a review and knowing absolutely nothing about the product 👍
Host completely missed the point of this. I am looking for a phone that can run whatsapp, and write emails, but is a ‘dumb’ phone for digital minimalism. The fact it can’t endlessly scroll, or play videos, whilst still being Android makes it perfect for this type of user…
terrible review
This phone would be better with the new lcd/eink screens that have on-the-fly changeable refresh rates..
This video had made a great disservice to E‑paper displays. I blame Will for not doing his homework on the subject.
The most important aspect of having E‑ink displays is :
- Much lower power consumption ( the display needs electricity only when its changing content, the phone can be totally off but still you can see the content on the screen )
- The display reflects light, so you can use it as a normal paper/book where the light from the environment is being used to light up the screen. no blue light is just a bonus.
–Where should this be used ?—- definitely not on a phone that you want to use to watch dynamic content such as a video
- most important usage is an E‑reader or a watch or a small screen that shows the price of a product in a store shelf…
The comparison between an LCD and e‑ink display is out of place here.
Maybe you should understand the tech first.
This will be good for someone who wants to have longer battery life. I mean, this can be used during emergency longer, gps tracking, longer phone hours for receiving calls and texting.
This is the future. As long as they can be made faster with colour. There is just something about eink, it just looks way better.
I WILL BUY IT
I’m daltonic (color blind). I need this phone. The problem is that nobody says if it runs Uber and Google Maps. And I really need Uber to go to work and go back home. If you please, shed some light into this topic.
It’s actually an awesome device.
I would buy it to read the news, surf the internet, go on socials, and work and chat, and read books instead of waste time on YouTube!
Too bad is Android and not Linux.
Anyway it was painful to see the host be so harsh and mean toward the poor guy only because he is clearly shy and not as charismatic. Very rude imho.
Will needs to hire a salesman
I like ink only if I go somewhere on vacation in nature because the battery lasts a long time. 20 years ago I was playing games on PC 386 that ran with the same frame rates as video on eink and I was happy that they started and ran on 386 and more I reduced it to see only 1/4 of the monitor and the games still ran so slowly.
Interviewer: You missed the point of the phone. You’re making fun of a device that is a God-send to people with Computer Vision Syndrome. That;s the selling point, and a lot of those folks are watching your video. That’s why I’m watching it. I have no alternatives.
It’s actually really nice for people who want to read a lot. I carry my 10-year-old everywhere.
the phone that will make you feel good about your phone
the fact that you can’t watch their trailer on their phone lol
I’d buy this. I’ll buy this soon.
I used to watch you everyday till you got a new setup. Love the old lew and bill and jack being the unknown.
I am someone who suffers from migraines when looking at a traditional stream that’s why eating technology is great and I would pay $300 for a working smartphone that used to eating technology
I would love this. Help me quit youtube
This is a perfect digital detox phone. Discourages the consumption of high fidelity media. It’s like being disconnected while being connected. Battery life is also a major plus, this is a kind of phone that you can sell to the Amish.
Nah dude. Some of us just want a phone that can technically do what other phones do but is mostly just out of sight and out of mind. A phone that is physically lightweight, that has multi-day battery life, but can still stream music to my car or show a recipe once in a while.
It’s a phone for those of us who hate phones.
TF. Id rock one no problem. Finally a phone with great battery life and you can see it outside without the battery instantly turning to goo due to the brightness being on max. I never ever watch youtube on my phone. so many ads its unusable. 99% of my phone use is all texting or calling, while working outside in the sun. For me the advantages so drastically outweigh the disadvantages its not even a question. I would love to see it being actually used. like what does the texting app look like?. how is the touch screen accuracy?, does it use the google play store? can I run a altarnative launcher, and what do the pictures look like if viewed on a computer? does it have a light? these things are important.
this guy is saying $300 is too much? how stupid do you have to be? What does he think kingrow is a charity I mean that seems cheap.
I would use it not at night but actually whent there is a lot of light , like under the sun, at the beach.… I would love an E‑ink color display phone with Android 12 .
I have been dieing to find a product like this. Because it discourages media consumption! Does it have a google playstore?
It was very hard on the phone. It could do with being a little cheaper but it would be great to be able to see the screen in bright sunlight and a battery life of 14 days would be great.
It has been only 4 years and we still haven’t seen more of these phones invading different markets. I wish to drop my android phone for something like this at the first opportunity. The phone has a special philosophy and I really need this in my life now. I am a programmer and stare the entire day at screens and I wish I could just take a break. An android E‑Ink phone will be perfect for checking emails, facebook, maps, making calls, playing music, and occasional reading of books and articles with a simple not too powerful camera.
Love it can’t believe these have been around 4 years $150-$200would be a better price bracket, this guy is to critical
I don’t watch videos or take photos on my phone; If I’m watching anything I’m on my desktop or TV. This phone is amazing! As long as I can download the Hallow App that’s all I need. How do I get this phone?!
i would love this
Dude why are you reviewing it (if you clearly don’t like it) an making his company look bad?
It was a little sade how you made fun of it.
You say you don’t want to discourage but you made fun of it all the time
Kendrick Lamar sent me here…
As i’m using a Palm PVG100 as my primarly phone, i can totally understand the hype about that product, for text, mails and phone only, if you want to watch youtube, you have your secondary phone for that, if you want to play game, you obviously have another phone for that (or you can’t deal a day with any recent phone).
It’s a phone for travellers, who don’t stay all their time on their phone, but watching outside, see things from their eyes… It’s a phone for a phone work, not much else, perfect for forgetting it in a pocket, and be joignable every time. Would love to find one with EU network bands on used market, 5.6 inches is a perfect size for tapping text messages, i had my Yotaphone 2, which was unbelievable, topic maker and gorgeous battery life, for a small size, even with the lag on the E ink screen, it’s not made for that… Of course, the Yotaphone had a primary LCD screen to switch to to use social medias or Youtube, but that’s a brilliant idea.
You didn’t understand the purpose of that kind of phone, that’s not an issue, but your reaction to that creator was clearly an issue. If you couldn’t understand how to use it, it shouldn’t mean it’s a bad product.
