Only West­ern­ers make all these Reli­gious dis­tinc­tions. Until the age of Colo­nial­ism Bud­dhists and Jains were just anoth­er sect of Hin­duism. Bud­dha is even con­sid­ered an Avatar of Lord Vis­nu. These dis­tinc­tions are fab­ri­cat­ed by West­ern Schol­ars who did­n’t under­stand the His­to­ry of Hin­duism and the Vedic Tra­di­tion.
Mount Kailas is the abode of Lord Sivá but the moun­tain is also revered for dif­fer­ent rea­sons by Bud­dhists and Jains.
Mount Kailas was often described in asso­ci­a­tion with Mount Meru and was con­sid­ered to be the cen­ter of the World. Hin­du Cos­mol­o­gy, such as in Surya Sid­dhan­ta, describe the Cos­mol­o­gy involv­ing Mount Meru going back at least 1,500 years but like­ly much longer than that. Espe­cial­ly con­sid­er­ing West­ern Schol­ar’s per­sist­ing to under esti­mate the age of Hin­du texts by hun­dreds and even thou­sands of years in some cas­es because they don’t like the idea that advanced non-Euro­pean Civ­i­liza­tions exist­ed thou­sands of years ago. Typ­i­cal Euro Cen­tric prej­u­dice.
In the Hin­du descrip­tions, the world of the var­i­ous Gods are seper­ate from that of Humans. The worlds of the Devas or God’s are called Lokas and they’re described in Ancient Hin­du texts as being above Earth where­as the abode of the Asur­as or Dae­mons that are not nec­es­sar­i­ly evil, but are more com­mon­ly asso­ci­at­ed with greed and jeal­ousy and are said to live in Lokas below the ground on Earth, along with oth­er unde­sir­able crea­tures.
The phys­i­cal rep­re­sen­ta­tion of this Cos­mol­o­gy is known as Mount Meru. It is rep­re­sent­ed in many ways and many forms depend­ing on the tra­di­tion it is com­ing from, such as Yantras from the Hin­du Tantric tra­di­tion. But they don’t nec­es­sar­i­ly look like the Bud­dhist rep­re­sen­ta­tion shown here. Over thou­sands of years, Mount Meru has been rep­re­sent­ed in count­less shapes and forms, some that go back long before the exis­tence of Bud­dhism or Jain­ism, though I can’t speak for Tao­ism.
It just seems like West­ern­ers are more inter­est­ed in fit­ting it all into a nar­ra­tive that suits them­selves, but the real­i­ty is, like most sto­ries in Hin­duism, Bud­dhism, and Jain­ism, depend­ing on where you are, the text you’re get­ting your infor­ma­tion from, and the tra­di­tion you’re com­ing from, much of the writ­ten His­to­ry and tales about the ancient Hin­du Cos­mol­o­gy is var­ied and some­times con­tra­dic­to­ry.
Who knows at this point where the idea of Mount Meru orig­i­nal­ly comes from or when it began bring asso­ci­at­ed with Mount Kailas.
If I had to bet, I would guess the con­nec­tion comes out of Shaivism tra­di­tion that asso­ciates Mount Kailas as the abode of Lord Sivá, as well as the cen­ter of the World. Mount Meru is also described in Surya Sid­dhan­ta as being sur­round­ed by water, which is sur­round­ed by anoth­er Loka, which is also sur­round­ed by water, and that sur­round­ed by anoth­er Loka. So the whole Cos­mol­o­gy can be made to fit what­ev­er you want it to. Chances are you can find a tra­di­tion that describes it such a way as to fit the nar­ra­tive you’re try­ing to sell.

I think i should change my reli­gion and pre­pare myself for Rein­car­na­tion, I don’t want to be pow­er­less in my next life.
