Why we DON’T love the Alienware 55 gaming monitor: full review

The Alienware 55, called such for its massive size, is certainly worth checking out, if for no other reason than its one of the biggest gaming monitors out there. Fun but not flawless, its downsides ultimately stand out given its sky-high price.

While we mostly liked the monitor itself…the price point makes it a pretty tough sell. What do you guys think of the monitor? Is there another monitor you’d like to see us review or stress test? Thanks for your feedback! 🙂
The issue isn’t the price, but what other options you have AT that price. If you buy a 55″ LG OLED TV, which still has all these feature PLUS much higher brightness, it becomes kind of ridiculous. That LG is $1500 display. It only has Displayport 1.4, but that’s not enough of a reason to spend $2.5K extra. Personally, I wish someone would just make a 43″ version of this thing. At that size, I might actually be able to use it as a monitor instead of a TV.
What game was that worh that guy in blue?
In the review she said Freesync which is nice if you have a Radeon card, but Freesync also works with Nvidia cards over displayport so yeah this video contains not complete information
You can buy a LG OLED 55″ 4K TV for $1600.. Might not be reaching the true 120hz refresh rate you get in some monitors (no Display Port input either) but the image quality will be top of the line without spending $3000.
Yes it is not worth 4000 but what about 3k or even 2k. Would you buy it? This will come down in price in a few months. My only complaint is that this should have been atleast 65 inches. The asus 65 is looking good .
overpriced junk.
She is scary 😨😨😨
does it come with a stand ? or is it another $1k for it?
wait, that’s not the new apple monitor
For any hardcore gamer who plays any type of shooter, especially if they hope to do so at a competitive level, 120–144hz is a must have. For as amazing as the C9 looks, and despite the amazing price, it’s suffering from a horrific double whammy of tech compatibility near misses: it doesn’t offer displayport, one way of achieving 120hz in today’s ecosystem, but it does offer HDMI 2.1, which also offers 120hz capability, but there is currently no video cards on the market that support HDMI 2.1 — the whole thing is like a cruel joke.
Whats this lady know about “gaming” lol
I’m going to guess this panel is sourced from LG, as nobody else is manufacturing screens this size using the technology. With less $ you can get LG TVs (2019 B9/C9mmodels) that are larger with over 3x the brightness, and all the HDMI 2.1 features (VRR/Earc/HLG/etc). With all the risk of static image burn-in, I don’t see why anybody would go OLED anyway (and then have to deal w/ Dell support over it). If the only true sell here is a single DP1.4 port, it’s a flat out fail…
Some of LGs OLED TV can be run at 120Hz 1080p or 60Hz 4K and are supposed to get a firmware update to enable gsynch. So yeah, get the cheaper one.
Ok boomer.
I’ll pick this up when it’s on clearance just like my Aw3418dw.
Launched at $1300, I bought it on clearance for $500.
Alienware’s aggressiveness in design does not allow its products to hold value.
OLED without HDR for 4000 no thanks
Toad
No HDR kills me.
Let’s be honest: What other vendor delivers OLED monitors at 55 inches with display ports? Oh yeah, no one. What other vendor delivers 120 Hz refresh 4K OLED monitors? No one. What other vendor delivers wide color gamut 4K , with .5 ms response? No one. Oh, and the price has fallen between $2500-$2999. That’s half the price of the 60 hz Apple panel. Oh, and 400 nits is brighter than most monitors. And you worry about gaming consoles that haven’t shipped as a reason to be down on this killer monitor? This is an amazing display and there is nothing like it on the market. Period.
honestly why do you need a TV right in front of your Face? xD
wtf grand ma! go bed!…
Trying to figure out if this is a good buy. Mainly, I’m getting that it’s not that great at $4000, but currently, it only costs $2500. So, is there something better in the price range?
I just got it for 2500. 🙂 can you help me find a wall mount that works with the VESA adapter it comes with.
Maybe I’m in a minority here, but I have been in the market for a huge 4k 120hz display for desktop use. My home office has good light control and I generally keep it pretty dim, so the low overall brightness is not as important as the blacks being properly black. 65″ is just too large for the depth of my desk, while 55″ should be (it is arriving tomorrow) perfect — huge but not so huge that I can’t see the edges.
It should be perfect for both FPS games (no pixel lag or smearing from the more in-depth tests I have seen) and of course excellent for flights sims and space sims due to the size and totally black blacks.
Costly? Sure, but there isn’t anything else like it if you want something bigger than 43″ but smaller than 65, and even those 65″ monitors aren’t OLED anyway.
I’m willing to spend $4000 but I need the best in order to maximize my experience while playing Old School Runescape. Thanks for this review!
Hahahaha You can get LG C9 OLED for less than $2000 and it can do HDR where as this $4000 monitor can’t and it doesn’t even have g‑sync for the price. What a big joke alienware.
To summarize : buy LG C9 or wait for the CX 😉 Thats such a shame its the only way to have 4K 120Hz via DisplayPort… I dont want to buy a new graphics card just to have HDMI 2.1 , i would want to use my 1080Ti a few years more
ok boomer
Let me guess, no HDR?
$4,000 for an overpriced monitor with HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2 that’s the real Crazy right there, the Crazy.
these are 2000 now.
at that point, get a freaking TV. My LG C9 even has HDMI 2.1
You can buy them new for 2500 but there are still other options. I bought a LG B7A for 1600 a few years ago. I still dont see a need to upgrade.
rather spend a 700$ 4k tv with HDR for gaming.
The brightness is a compromise given to the OLED panel because of burn in. LG has released display panels in the past with ridiculously bright whites, but it caused such a fast burn in time. If you consider your environment, the gamma settings and the conservative aspect to this monitor. It’s absolutely the unicorn we have been dreaming of. I’d love to afford it, but maybe by the time I have the money an upgrade will be here 🙂
they toned down the brightness because they couldnt get a proper anti burn in method going.. because alienware is not a real tech company. yeah for 4 thousand dollars they could have made a proper gsync panel
Also the good thing about this type of OLED monitor is you don’t need to buy a TV license but unfortunately no HDR and USB 2.1 support and you still get the dreaded burn in i would stay away from this not worth it until such a monitor comes out with at least a 32 inch with an IPS 4K 120Htz or more HDR and a low ms response time with G Sync then it gets my attention as 27inchs 4k montors for me is to small for 4K gaming and most of the bigger screen are crap VA panels
Nice review but kinda creepy keep doing close ups of womens face. What has that got to do with a review. just my op
Get ready for those image retention warranty claims. There is a reason LG do not cover screen burn in there warranty and that is why i went the Samsung QLED route. The Q80 is 120hz 4k HDR and 1500nit brightness and it cost me £2k just over and it is a 65in.
Can’t we start with getting a 27″ or 32″ OLED monitor? Is that so difficult?
now days anyone can become a reviewer
Isn’t burn-in still a threat for oled monitors/tvs?
And 55 inch is not big enough for couch gaming and even worse for couch computing. 65 inch would be ideal for gaming and 77 inch for computing. You can get an LG OLED77C9 for the same price or just slightly higher price.

Dude hit the gym Jesus
Instead of spending $4,000 for that sh** I go prefer spending $3,000 for a 55″ A90J. ^^
