Motorola Razr’s secret is the HINGE not the screen

The new Motorola Razr hits a lot of right notes: nostalgia, size and a foldable display. I got to visit the lab at Motorola’s headquarters in Chicago, where I saw the design and engineering process behind the Razr’s zero-gap hinge and how it allows the phone to go from perfectly flat to folded in half.
The Razr is the third foldable device to be released in the past year. After a troubled launch in April, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold officially went on sale in September. And at the end of 2018, Royole launched the FlexPai, a large phone that opens up into a tablet. But the pocketable size and creaseless flat-folding display make the Razr unique. And while the screen is the star of the show, the hinge is what’s doing all the work.

It is very like my old RAZR from 2004. It has a huge chin, but then again, it’s not the only huge chin in this video. 🤔
Samsung has joined the channel
If this is turning out even half as good as the original Razr, this will be a damn good phone. I had that for like 3 years until a drunken party and a drop in the toilet. Let’s just hope this time it can withstand the water.
Maybe this is the decade when mechanical engineering truly comes back into mobile phone development! Love that they actually have gears inside the phone. I bet someone like Steve Jobs would have hated it!
Excellent video! Bravo to Moto for this too.
The gap between the screen and the back as you open/close…things can get inside. But I love how they fixed the things going inside via the back of the hinge issue! I think they did, anyways — maybe? The rounded middle plastic bit and the side pieces sit flush no matter which fold position it is in
i picked up the razor in a recycling center and really can’t wait for this to be at the $300 price point AU…one day. it’s so satisfying to fold and flip a phone.
Amazing product
This may rock the Moblle market
Great video and break down of this phone.
The phone has a big chin. Almost like a double chin. Oh wait…
I’m more concerned about the dust incursion thats going to happen in those gaps.
Budget phone at premium price,I’m not paying €1300’s to be their guinea pig
To be honest it’s a combination of both screen and hinge.…as Steve Jobs would say…”patent that hinge…by god we have!”
That is a Lenovo engineered phone pretending to be Motorola. Motorola doesn‘t exist.
nice review thx ^^
There are new phones that have been released before the year ended and most of them have better specifications (e. g. Quad camera) than Motorola Razr).
@3:09 when you watch at slowmo 0.25 what is that under the screen some pictures? butterfly hand key star
Not bad at all for a first try.
This will be a big hit. Far more practical than the other foldables. I would buy this, but $$$.
Can wait to get mine next month.…I’m gonna argue on the phone for no apparent reason just so I can slap it closed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best engineering works 👍 in 2019
Is it cool Yes but $1500 ! No way I’ll buy it till the price is $500 or LESS !!!!
I want to go back call one gold back
will not buy chinese tech.….chinese tech equals CCP, equals backdoors (hardware based) Lenovo
Fantastic insight. Well presented. Keep up the good work.
Wow this dude needs to stop worrying about devices and more about his health.…. Jesuz
If I have money this is what I will be buying
I’d be sold on it if they didn’t use a 3yr old chip in such a new device
Hi, very impressive phone, but I did notice a gap under the screen when opening and closing , what’s to prevent dust etc getting under it?
And that’s why you get dust and dirt in space behind screen at fold @4:39
wow i need one of this
Ok. Now I understand the 1500 dollar price tag. It all went to the R and D.
The screen is difective which peels in just 2 months of use with air bubbles forming between the screen layers and becomes non responsive, don’t buy
Still best phone out , 2 years later no gap like Samsung trash 🗑️
My “hinge” doesn’t function correctly anymore. My inside display does not turn off and switch to the exterior display. Motorola customer service offered to repair it for $1050…
