Spend any time in New York or London and you’ll come across dozens of people whizzing along each city’s streets on electric scooters. Yet, despite their popularity, e‑scooters are technically illegal in both places, and the politicians with the power to change things are in no rush to do so. So what’s the hold up?

Are e‑scooters popular where you are? Do you want to see more, or less?
So this video started off talking about scooters 8n general and ended up talking about rental scooters only.
I’ve been riding an escooter for over ten years I started with a zappy and even back then more and more people were getting into scooters, but the problem has never been anything to do with safety, you can register a 500 watts escooter as a moped and insure it but a 1000 watts you can’t get insurance anymore.
I have a fully registered escooter number plate the lot so if it were anything to do with safety the govt would not register escooters.
The laws the govt will bring in will be draconian highly restrictive, making escooters almost useless.
So if Scooters are not legal because of they’re potential danger 🤔 but cars bicycles mopeds motorcycles horses lorries buses aren’t or are they all going to be banned now aswell in uk its ridiculous all they have to do is say anyone over 18 with a motorbike licence is OK and any one else with a car licence etc can have to be restricted to 20 mph 16 and over take a test etc super simple
Just let people that buy their own escooter ride them because nobody will leave theirs on the floor around streets..
Just found this on YouTube, in NYC there has been a law since 2018 and updated to allow use of e‑scooters on public roads. So I don’t understand how lazy these guys were before they posted this video. You can ride your personal e‑scooter on the road in NYC as long as you don’t go above 25mph. There are updates continuously, so keep checking your municipality websites.
When laws are not enforced it makes the government looks stupid. It makes the laws look stupid. It’s unjust.
There is no need for fines or legal threats. If the road is full of cars and you get on with a scooter, your higher risk of injury is more than enough punishment. It’s all relative though. If everyone was on a scooter then your risk of injury goes down, though some risk is always there. Point being…let people make their own decisions.
I’m from the US, and I’ll be working in London for the next 2 years. I purchased one today out of necessity because my commute isn’t too far and it isn’t too close, but I now have to keep it in a closet until I come back. Now it’ll collect dust for the next 2 years. This is by far the most counter-intuitive piece of “legislation” I’ve ever heard.
Yep not even mobility scooter are allowed in cycle lanes by law but a class 8 mobility scooter can by law ride on the road in the traffic lane even though they only do 8 mph
Uk people are all just cry babies complaining about everything. Also, all accidents that happened with electric scooters are to blame on the riders because they don’t respect the basic rules of using the road. These individuals are a danger to themselves and to everyone else with or without riding a scooter
Its legal in nyc, 30 mph maximum, no highways, no sidewalks. They’re building more and more bicycle lanes, which scooters are using.
the government dont mke any money or cant tax e scooters that is the main reason the councils wil lose money lol
They are perfectly legal here in Oklahoma as long as you don’t drive them on the sidewalk
This is some stupid government sh it here
Living in Canada is great for scooter
EScooter must be driven inside bicycle roads.
As an avid e‑scooter rider here in Calgary, I have seen more idiots on bikes than scooters. Sure, there are idiots on scooters too, but I see more cyclists riding too fast and performing dangerous manoeuvres on the paths than scooters. Both scooter and bike share the same responsibilities and it all comes down to the rider’s attitude. I have a relatively powerful scooter and just because I can go fast, doesn’t mean I should. Finally folks, wear the damn gear!!!
All Europe using them and it’s OK so people in UK are from the glass? To much this safety first, when I was brake my leg , I lern to don’t do that again, pain is the best teacher if are not responsible for this what you doing. Scooters should be OK if you have driving license and over 25years old
Minimum standard’s don’t work if you look now there are e- bikes and e‑scooters thatdo 60mph on the road no minimum speed regulations will catch or stop them the only was is registration and mot
it’s simply all about tax…
From NYC DOT: E‑scooters are allowed in NYC. They have handlebars and a floorboard or seat, and may be powered by electric and/or human power.
You must not operate an e‑scooter in excess of 15 MPH. E‑scooters may be ridden in bike lanes and on streets with speed limits no greater than 30 MPH. Do not ride e‑scooters on sidewalks.Helmets are recommended for all e‑scooter riders, and required for 16 and 17 year olds.
People tend to be against anything that’s new. The bicycle has been around of over a couple centuries, so nobody cares about them.
It’s perfectly legal now so it might be a good idea to remove this video
Our laws in general are screwed.
Why the hell cant scooter run in bicycle lane it doesn’t make sense
I live way upstate. Nyc is congested. I’m an older person
Who has a big seated mototec scooter. I’m adding blinkers and good lights. I follow traffic laws and wear a helmut. This video is not all true. In mid 2022, cops. Know we’re here to stay!
E scooters are overrated
Why can’t you just buy a pair of rollerblades or use a bike? Oh because it’s electric?Atleast biking and rollerblading is good exercise. Geez are people too lazy to use a bike or rollerblade?
One word.….discrimination.….can easily win this case in court.……if most people uses scooters there will be less taxes collected by the Government due to not using approved transportation methods that Government rely on the TAXES these form of Transportation generated.……just sit down and think about this a moment .….. .this is the reason “Free Energy Devices” are surpressed and home inventors of these devices are no longer walking and breathing on the planet.…..
Looking forward to the follow-up on this one I’ll tell you what we the public people want we the public people want to have the same rules for E scooters as a public bicycle would have that’s what we the public people want nothing more nothing less don’t try to add anything to it and make it more complicated then it needs to be just give the public people what we want we want for the E scooter to be ridden in the bike Lane as a normal public bicycle would with the same rules applied as a public bicycle that’s what we the public people want nothing more nothing less case closed
The way those people ride e scooter is giving me headache they dont even have a protection gear like full covered face helmet and other protection gear.

It’s a More pollution solution
Saving lots of money
the seat is way to small its not what thy tell you
I think you need to draw a line between personal scooters, and the scourge of e‑waste rental scooters, which have lifespan shorter than your average flea. Rental scooters should not be allowed to dump their shady VC money on city streets with absolutely zero responsibility towards their disposal
It’s not the tool, it’s the idiots riding them.
I was in new york a month ago. Is full of legal electric bikes and scooters
If they dont allow scooters then let the electrical bikes come in
