The JVC GR-C1 Camcorder was the first all-in-one handheld video camera. I trace the history of homemade videos back to the release of this iconic piece of tech and shows how its popularity led to the videos we watch on YouTube today. Fellow YouTube creator Casey Neistat shows me how to film and edit videos on this piece of retro tech. Spoiler alert: It’s not easy.

Marques in white face was shocking.
None factor. A Brian washed standard and thinking is not relevant.
that mask is so terrifying 😂 Marques looked like he was having fun in it though lol
I love these retro-tech videos! I was born in ‘85 but I remember the home movies my dad made on that camcorder, and how I was forbidden to touch it lol
YT Originals is dead in 2 weeks (as im commenting this). I would recommend watching this before it’s gone
So… Did you edit it tape to tape?
Im not even from this era but this video felt nostalgic and hit me hard about tech
Well done, brings back the memories!
anyone give me any leads on the best hi8 cameras
And the homemade adult porn industry was launched that same year😂😂😂😂.
I wish Marques would take this topic a tad further, creating practical comparisons to 3–6 years “old” versus current tech. Many people don’t need the latest and greatest, and it could incite them to pick up pre-owned stuff to benefit the environment and the labour force behind the tech industry. For example, my wife is not a big techie and is perfectly fine using a 4–6y old Apple Watch. I only replace much-needed tech when at least three years have passed without significant issues.
I just have a couple nitpicks on the history here.
There were absolutely home movies before the camcorder. My late grandpa’s collection of questionably-exposed 8mm film reels attests to that. Just as you would have a slide projector to show people your 35mm Kodachrome slide photos, it was not too uncommon in middle-class America for people to have 8mm or Super‑8 cameras and projectors. Rich people would go 16mm, and if you were into movies you could get 16mm prints to watch at home. That was a rich people thing, but it was a thing. 8mm home-movies were not a rich people thing though. I think they’re walking a fine technicality by saying “video”, which in the old days meant analog television signals on magnetic tape. That really WAS strictly for professionals until the first camcorder (which was Beta, btw). Of course, because 8mm was quite limited and irritating to use, the camcorder really did make home movies more accessible.
The other thing is, VHS (and Beta) were NOT introduced for watching movies at home. If you only wanted to do that, you bought a Laserdisc player, which was a cheaper machine, and movie discs were cheaper than tapes (like, $30 instead of $80). The VCR was revolutionary because it allowed you to record TV, hence the name Video Cassette Recorder. Broadcast TV was everything to people in the 70s, and the ability to watch a show that aired while you were at work or on vacation was far far more valuable to people than the novel concept of watching Star Wars at home. VCRs rapidly entered homes strictly for their television recording capabilities. Once everyone had VHS, that format had a huge advantage for every new video application that came along. Video rental stores? Why buy a Laserdisc player when we already have a VCR? Home movies? Why buy a Super‑8 projector when we already have a VCR? Today, home theater and video recording are huge parts of our lives, whereas no one records TV broadcasts anymore. It’s easy to lose sight of peoples’ priorities circa 1979.
I used to love these as a kid! We have them at my home, I liked to play news caster and my mom would film me. We still have all those old tapes that are a bit cumbersome to move out.
The thing about things filmed on the physical media is the fact that once the physical media has been used, too much playback, too much and as older, there’s no way to get the footage or photos out anymore. As opposed to nowadays, you can just make copies of many things on a drive and put it on the cloud and you’ll have some thing for a while if not forever. Which makes me wonder how many lost home movies there actually is from back in the day just kind of lost.
“MKB-SD here” your best work
I was 10 when this came out, my uncle bought one at some point.
I’m blind in my right eye so I literally can’t use this
Just bought a handycam in December 😅
“MKBSD here” was so good
I am looking forward to see more from MKBSD he has a great potential
retro has a big place in my heart.
@21:40 “don’t eat while recording your videos”
The thousands of Mukbangers and ASMR content creators: SAY WHAT!😳
12:03 is the reason I want one of these cameras 😂
Great Video Sir. From one great enthusiast to another, I can’t understand why I haven’t come across your channel before! I reviewed the JVC GF-500 and JVC CB-P5 for my channel. The latter was was a nightmare, but so such fun. 🙂 You have a new subscriber.
Happy To See You Anytime Love You Forever ♾ !!! ❤🇰🇭🇺🇸❤️🙏🏻
I have a old Sony camcorder from the 90s that I know works but I haven’t recorded anything because I don’t have any blank tapes lying around I might try to get some blank tapes to use on the camcorder
19:31-19:40. Without the JVC camcorder, MKBHD would not be out of a job, he still would be one of the best of content creators. He is MKBHD, y’all! 🤠
I love retro/Vintage life <3
MKBHD should make more retrotech videos. His retrotech videos are really good. And there’s still more retrotech out there that he can make videos about
this is like picking or knocking on your grandparents while they’re not in the room… but not realizing that they were the innovators of the tech that you take for granted now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…and to think, everyone with a smartphone says “i’m filming it” !!!!
That BREATHING exercise was HILARIOUS 😂😂😂😂
Man i❤ your retrotech video bro! So many good memories, so satisfying seeing old tech.. thanks again
Pena que no Brasil so pessoas extremamente ricas tinham.
“Oh shoot this thing is freaking out”
Amazing!
Bring the series back yo
At 10:47 for like 3 mins straight when I came back from putting shit in the dishwasher and finishing my food, I thought I received some old 80’s equipment because the video was stopped for that time. My god I was so confused. It turned out was just my macbook displaying the image where I stopped it. Man it was so confusing.
Cameraman
I have used that JVC camcorder. And I shot cool videos with that same camcorder.
I feel like the rca cpr250 is the best because it uses full size vhs tapes
What kind of camera is that? 18:34 ? 🤔😉
