The first ever cellular phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. It cost $10,295 in today’s dollars and had to charge for 10 hours just to make a 30 minute call. Without the DynaTAC, would we all have cellphones today? I dive into the history and impact of this piece of iconic tech and explores how its release led to our current cell phone obsessed culture. YouTube creators Austin Evans and Sara Dietschy join me to test out some other pieces of retro tech, like a pager and a lipstick cellphone.

i didnt realize austin was that short.
Had that 8000 (brick phone) motorola in 1991. Was surreal the first few phone calls on it — middle of a parking lot during a snow storm
I am so mad that he doesn’t know what saved by the bell
Who doesn’t know who/ what “Saved by the Bell” was?!??? 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
I got my first phone in 2013 when I was 10. It was a dumb monochrome lcd phone which replaced the telephone in our house. The only thing it could do was to call people. No camera, No songs, No games just calling
retro has a big place in my heart.
Zach Morris has entered the chat.
To record “Golden Girls”
😂😂😂
What ‼️ you don’t know who Zach Morris is.… Lol
Yeah, back in the 1990s when I was little, the world had those, kitchen phones with curly cords, and pay phones to talk to people in the country and world.
Doesn’t know Zac Morris, I am old
Why there are not some of these videos in your videos list?!
That Motorola multi color flip phone is dope.
187 😂
707 = LOL
The GTA Vice City Phone LMAO
That compact looking phone is insane! Crazy how many different designs there used to be for phones. Now everything looks the same, although some designs of the past weren’t great in practical use I certainly miss the alure of the originality back then.
When Marques said I’m too young to have seen Saved by the Bell I thought I’m too old to have watched it, LoL! another forgotten I guess you could call it tech would be back in the ’70s and ’80s say you needed to set your clocks in your house how would you find out what time it was. Easy! you used to be able to call “Tme”! I haven’t called time, obviously, in over 30 years. crazy enough I still remember the number for here in Philadelphia. Back when we called Time There wasn’t yet a requirement to add the area code in front of the number if it was a local call. I’m guessing now you’d have to add 215 of front of it but times number used to be TI6-1212. Yes! that is the letter “T” and the letter “I”! The first two characters of a phone number usually started with letters to make it easier to remember. In fact my very first phone number I can ever remember having as a child at home started with CU9! OMG! I just tried calling “Time” at 215–846-1212 And it’s somebody saying “testing 1 2 3 4 5, testing 1 2 3 4 5” and then it hangs up! WTF is that??
Dang I used to have a pager. And I remember using the I miss you page to my gf lol.
Before the cellphone, at least you always knew where your phone is.
16:26 bro no way you are just casually wearing off-white Chicago 1s. That’s more impressive than this whole video
eins acht sieeebeeen
I LOVE this series! I wasn’t even really aware of these until I stumbled across one while watching your other videos. Great stuff!
“we have a 187 on a undercover cop” — Dr Dre
I guess it’s good that this generation doesn’t know what 187 means lol
Hi Marques. Great vid. Do you know the approx value today of the Dynatac 8000x?
Thx.
I wonder if in 40 years kids will be looking back at our current smartphones wondering how we got by.
I suddenly realize — I still have some VHS to return.
drug cartel members knew the pager, 1g phones than average consumers
Pagers are still used in the medical field and other first responders
I love that the mood went down when they found the answer for 187
