Everyone knows the 1984 Macintosh computer was a game changer for the tech industry. But why was this particular computer so iconic? I learn how Steve Jobs and his team took on computer giants IBM, changing personal computing forever. Living legend Bill Nye the Science Guy joins me to play Asteroids on an original Macintosh. And fellow YouTube creator and Apple expert iJustine explains why the 1984 Macintosh was able to beat its competitors.

I stopped watching on 06:48
Steve Jobs once only agreed to sign an old Mac if he could pry off the arrow keys himself
Excellent story! My very first computer was the SE30 in 1990. No more floppy disc to boot up any longer. I used it for my college paper, report write up at home, and while in my college’s classroom was teaching Word Perfect and Auto CAD in DOS version. It was quite the contrasting experience.
I have a Macintosh Classic which I bought circa 1988, and it is still in working order. The Apple Stylewriter printer has long since turned up its toes and died, but the computer itself still works. I am able to use MacWrite on it, the train and puzzle games still work, as do my special Star Trek sounds that I loaded onto it way back then. I still have a huge affection for this little machine. It was awesome in its day.
Damn. Imagine lives this day without steve jobs. We’d be smashing rocks.
how much this computer could cost?
Intimidating machine 😂😂
I’m 27 now and this mac came out 1984 that’s around almost 15 years before I was born holy shit 😢 I was born in 1996
The Apple Lisa was a weird omission from this video. Making like the Mac was the first personal computer with a GUI is weirdly misleading.
Lmao clicked off as soon as I saw iJustine.
bill the science guy using the first mac. W0W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born in 1984 and I’m a huge Steve Jobs fan. This is my favorite Marques video by far. Thanks!
Ashton Kutcher needs to play Steve Jobs when they’re gonna make an Apple movie
Just to let you know, I was in 10th grade in 1973. At first my high school had a couple of dumb terminals hooked up two acoustic couplers that communicated with a computer somewhere. Later on, we got a full-fledged computer that was about the size of an upright freezer. We still had the dumb terminals hooked up to it. We would write BASIC programs on the dumb terminals, run them, and then the output would go on paper. You could also save the BASIC program that you wrote, using the ticker tape, and then load it from the ticker tape later on.
Wow, so now mr black guy tech nerd (aka safe for suburban white liberal female viewers) is going to try and break into the “retro” tech scene. Stay in your lane Brownlee, there are tons of YouTubers a fraction of your size that have already said all there is to say. I fear your giant production team is going to ape a lot of other channels for these videos and it’s too bad.
This computer was one of the biggest technological achievements in history.
holy shit i freaked out when i saw bill nye the science guy
I worked at a newspaper in the early 80s and we used all this stuff, IBM clones and the original 1984 Macs. Cool to look back at, would not want to relive those slow as molasses days.
The Microsoft computer was like way later than those guys
Macincraps aren’t computers, they’re appliances. Intel/AMD machines are computers, you have to learn how they work in order to use them, not plug them in and remain ignorant.
I literally almost backflipped when I saw Justine holy shit like I first discovered her in Rosanna Pansino’s videos skdjnsknjf
AND I FEEL LIKE I GOT WHIPLASH WHEN I SAW BILL NYE LIKE HOLY SHITTTTTTTT
Great video. Love how much of a good time Bill Nye is having, too 😁
It all started at the XEROX research center (aka Xerox PARC — Palo Alto Research Center). They invented stuff like the mouse and the graphic user interface but didn’t know what to do with it, and that’s where both kids, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates came in and made use of it. Thank you, Marques, for another wonderful video. You sure brought back memories.
Bill NYE was DOPE!
a little bit of my soul died when that one woman went “Ooh, these would make cute coasters!
” while holding floppy disks
is the rainbow flag was there in these days?
Omg i learned on this thing in school in computer lab! Maybe a model later seemed more squared.
Bill Nye makes me sad
This is a great video .. from start to end ❤
Pinot is a great artist
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched one of your videos.… but damn you casually got bill nye. I must’ve missed something
why i can’t see the number of views, who can give me a explain?
“Does more, cost less” something that no longer applies to Apple products, now it’s “does less, costs more”
To eject the disk you can shut the computer off and then back on while holding down the mouse button.
In the 1985 film “Back to the future”, the hotcake of the year Mac is sitting on an antique shop.
cool video even though I hate mac/apple haha
Absolutely amazing video. Very well done. I was one of those “kids” that started working on those early “personal” computers. My coding machine back then was an Atari 1200XL, then a TRS-80 in high school, then the Commodore Amiga. It was such an amazing time for technology which laid the groundwork for what we all take for granted today.
Amiga the best 😛
WHY MACINTOSH EMULATION ON AMIGA IS FASTER THAN THE ORIGINAL
To be clear: assuming we get the CPU/Co-processor performance denominator (e.g. 030/50 or 040/25 — which was stock on the Amiga 4000) on both sides, I believe the Amiga is able to emulate the Macintosh more effectively and more efficient than the original itself.
This show is an elementary look at computers, barely valuable as educational. Perfect for today’s social media, misinformation generation.
03:55 that was a great prank 😉
Bill Nye having a moment there. 😂
16:42 I actually really really liked the loading time lol, it’s dope too! The way it was going slowly plotting. Satisfying to watch.
