Google is known for being one of the best places to work. But for the many content moderators working for Google and YouTube, the job is traumatic. And even the best workplace conditions don’t make up for the fact that many moderators suffer long term psychological consequences of doing this job. The Verge traveled to Washington, DC and Austin, TX to speak to a former full time google moderator and to current YouTube contract moderators to see how their experiences compare.
Following his investigations on Facebook, The Verge’s Casey Newton reports on the working conditions and side effects of scrubbing the internet of “violent extremism” content at Google and YouTube. You can read the full exclusive here:

I would love to work for YouTube. In my country we see people dead on the streets at a very young age
You should know what you are getting into, before you take the job. So if you are getting to the point of having ptsd and going to therapy, you shouldn’t have got into that career. You know what you can stomach and what you cannot stomach…
“protects free speech online” jesus thats extremely ironic
Sad that all these same videos are 3 years or older.
The woke mob attacking people channels and computers. Twitter have shown us all we needed to see. .….….….…GRIM
The only thing we really need to know about them is .… where do they live? .….….….GRIM
Google should hire people with low/no empathy, on that job, cause they would not care about people on screen. Just ban and move on.
The Real true of content moderators… In Portugal it is worse 20 people quit from my company and the other ones are in sick leave… for a minimum wage… so sad
Tbh the dark side of discord is the same or worse than being a Google/yt mod.…💀
12:05 make videos too😂
He’s one of them
This is part of the decay of our society.
I think I’m in the wrong profession..
2:20 What the job actually was

“only a psycho could do this” i have aspd, and just because I wont stop for a stranger who is stuck on the side of the road without gas to help them doesn’t mean I want to see people’s insides everyday all the time or at all. what a gross simplification of a group of human beings. It’s gross, honestly, y’all make us seem like we’re not humans with our own breaking point and ability to experience trauma. I experience love, emotions, and healthy relationships even just like you. i have a hard time empathizing with strangers, that’s literally it. I’m not the freaking hulk.
since 2012 a you tube content reviewer in Australia has stalked and interfered with my life , over the last decade they have networked with other moderators all over the net, stalking and interfering with there lives. if any one cares to investigate these individuals I have over a decade of diaries kept
At this point in time…I’m going to disagree on the very point that Google is the best place to work in this day and age what with the Ad-blocker fiasco/ Google+ (thankfully which is no more)/Adpocalypse/and a myriad of other changes they made to this site ever since 2010/Taking away thumbs down amounts compared to thumbs up/ taking away our ability to thumbs down comments and actually being able to mark those comments as spam/trolls who proliferate on here/bots… Should I go on or have I made my point crystal clear here?
Good! Have a nice day.
They are the worst
YouTube mods IMO have pushed people to do horrible things. I get It’s their job, I feel sorry for the victims of the human trafficking youtube runs Ad’s for.
