We put both budget smart speakers to the test to see which one is better at providing hands-free help.
Both smart speakers respond to a wide variety of questions and commands thanks to their digital assistants, Google Assistant and Alexa. You can check the weather, search for local restaurants, command your smart home gadgets and more.
They’re both great options, but we pit the two against each other in a trivia contest and compare their speakers to declare a winner.

I own both in my house. It’s difficult to distinguish the differences. I want to buy a third device so I thought I’d watch this video to get all the details I don’t currently know. I find my Echo speaker to be of greater sound quality than my Google Home and it also has better music on Spotify when I let it play on it’s own. The only command I use 98% of the time is to play certain songs or playlists. So that makes my decision too easy, Echo all the way. I also find myself repeating myself with Google. It may be the location I have it, but sometimes it doesn’t hear me. With the Echo, I could be a room away and it will hear be perfectly. I think this has something to do with the mic placement on the flat surface whereas the Google Home’s are located under the fabric which might cause some filtering.
If you’re an iPhone user, Amazon echo dot is best. You can use your Apple Music subscription directly within the speaker without having to use Bluetooth.
The google mini has a better sound quality and better communication skills but has too many bug issues going on and I can’t use my Apple Music subscription within the speaker. The google constantly disconnects from Bluetooth on all devices connecting, including the connecting Bluetooth lights and the connecting phone. This was very frustrating as I wanted to play music from the google mini and after 2 min the Bluetooth would disconnect-__-. The Bluetooth would even disconnect from my Phillips Bluetooth light. I’d say, “hey google, turn on light” and it would not cut on until I Factory restart the light bulb, then reconnect it to the google home … very frustrating. With my amazing 1st gen this problem does not happen. The echo dot is just good enough, but could be better with multiple request features and sound quality.
You are from Kentucky Louisville
Personally I don’t like Alexa’s voice as much as google
It sounds slow and depressed but it is also nice sometimes
so funny! thanks for the review!
Whoa, I recognized that restaurant, I live in the same city as you bro! 😛
I have both the Echo Dot and Nest mini. I find the Echo dot and Alexa ecosystem more developer friendly especially for those who may want to develop customized functions.
google has a version with a screen echo only has a tall version like what difference does it make besides a louder speaker?

Most of us started with the best speakers first like Sonos but now we’ve got voice assistants that gadget gets under utilized. Maybe a review of what works best to get more use out of better speaker sound quality could be addressed. Like ease of hook up and how to do it. Which works better with streaming radio stations and which ones. I use TuneIn.
biased much? Shameful. Dot has better base quality and higher volumes without distortion. In your test, questions were answered with much more detail on dot, which is common. Dot has way better interactive voice games for adults and kids. Dot has a clock. You didn’t even test the voice to smart-home connection. Those of us who have had both know who would win that. You are a great example of why consumers cannot trust the internet. Try to be more objective if you’re going to do product reviews.
What are the things that Nest mini is having that dot doesnot have and dot that mini doesnot have
Spotify is giving away Nests right now for a premium Spotify subscription. At least in Canada.
Big plus for the Google Nest Mini is that since it was made by Google, you can use Google Chrome to cast audio.
Got both since Spotify sent a free nest. Echo is clearly better. The Nest can answer random Google questions, but Alexa’s knowledge database is always improving. Echo has a far better speaker. The Nest lacks bass entirely. That’s why this guy thinks it sounds “more clear”, when really it just sounds more thin and tinny. The Echo has an objectively better speaker, in terms of dynamic range. The test done in this video is meaningless, this guy doesn’t know a thing about sound quality. You’re just going to hear it through your speaker, and bass will just become more muffled. In real life, the Echo sounds twice as good for music. That said I’d never use either for music, so maybe speaker isn’t so important.
Alexa responds to extremely casual language, and has a much more natural voice. “Alexa” or “Echo” is way easier to say than “OK Google”, which matters to me. The Echo also seems more responsive to smart home device commands though I haven’t tested Nest extensively here. There are also a lot more settings and customization options in the Alexa app. The one leg up the Nest has is being able to make Google searches, but those aren’t always correct, and like I said, Alexa is getting much better at random questions. I suspect the Echo will be just as good in that regard soon. Alexa gets smarter all the time. Year to year I see huge improvements, Google assistant, not so much. I say get the Echo. They’re both good though and if you NEED the Google ecosystem, get the Nest.
To me, the Echo wins all day though.
I have both Google and Alexa devices. It’s a HUGE difference in how they work and what a person considers being intuitive. Next time you make a video you should do a test when you ask them a distance between two places. On Google device you just get an answer. On Alexa it’s a totally different story. First it will complain and ask you to install distance widget. After that is done and you repeat your question — Alexa will tell you that you need to use that distance widget and will start it. After that you need to repeat your question AGAIN! With Alexa it’s totally different approach and I find it very cumbersome and frustrating. The only thing that is missing from Google Mini is 3.5mm jack. That’s why I still need to rely on Echo Inputs. For me, my way of thinking and what I consider being logical and intuitive Google is a clear winner. Sure, it’s not perfect but at least you don’t need to jump through hoops to perform basic tasks. If your brain wired in a different way you might find Alexa more fitting you.
Google’s voice is just too good
