August’s new lock features a couple of important changes: built-in Wi-Fi and a much smaller body. We’ve liked August’s previous offerings, and this is the best one yet. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock proves itself as the best retrofit smart lock and wins CNET’s Editors’ Choice award.
The $250 lock is expensive, but we talk about why the cost is worth it if you want retrofit smarts for your front door.

How does it work when there is Wifi/Power outage?
Whoever hired you at CNET should be fired.
you have to replace the battery every 3 to 6 months, im out.…
Rechargeable cr123 ‘s 👍😹
Now I know what happend to Ben Brode, after he left Blizzard!
what happens if your phones flat lol
Rechargeable RCR123’s — Who doesn’t buy rechargeable batteries these days?
Found it half price on RatedGadgets
He is annoying
how does the proximity lock work? If I come home and iphone connects to bluetooth/wifi does it automatically unlock the door for me?
worse review I ever saw of any product. Go in depth in the features not slightly graze thru it.
so far not one review showed me this lock being able to have multiple users. I want to be able to share the code with guests that frequent my place. I want to schedule those codes as well.
Great review ! Make more videos more
You forgot to tell us anything about this lock except that it uses WiFi. What does it do that makes it special? How does it operate? Whats so smart about it?
Nice
So no key pad? i have to carry my phone or have a key?
The August smart lock is the single worst thing I have ever installed in my house. You name it, I have had a problem with it. The mechanical connection with the adapter to the door gets stripped out, things don’t fit correctly, Wi-Fi issues, Bluetooth issues, software issues, problems getting replacement parts, HomeKit connectivity issues, and overall horrible performance.
It is a constant source of embarrassment and frustration.
Does this work with Apple Homekit?
2:05 will it play nice with a wifi network that’s not broadcasting its SSID?
this dudes personality is awful.
and what an awful place to live pay your people more cnet
How does this lock stack up against the Schlage Encode?
Worst smart lock. Battery die within 2 months
Pro tip. Buy those batteries on Amazon, with that fancy Alexa smart speaker, and it’s the same price for two but you’ll get six.
Robber from outside of house: “Alexa! Unlock the front door!”
Alexa from inside of house: “OK.”
Worst review ever
It’s good and simple
Which lock allows you to add multiple homes (more than 5)? Nest offers up to 5 homes via Google home and I need more than 5. Any thoughts?
CONCUR, this lock is a WINNER. I bought this as soon as i could because the 3rd Generation lock was a LOSER. The hub never stays up and the internal mechanism on the 3rd generation fails all the time and has to be continually reset. They redesigned the internal mechanism and it just simply works well ALL the time. Built in WIFI never goes offline as well. I can definitely recommend this product. I just wish they would do the same with their other product ‘The Smart Lock” which fails to connect to wifi hub all the time. Regardless of AP it failed with my mikrotik capac, then an TP Link eap245 and finally the current AP a TP link 660HD (wifi6) and that is the AP, the hub, and the lock in line of sight , no walls or doors. Come on Auguste put wifi in your Smart Lock too!!
Be careful if you buy an August lock second hand. If the previous owner doesn’t relinquish ownership, you have an expensive paperweight. August customer service is terrible with this.
This guy moved WAY TOO FAST for a good video showing how to actually install the lock. Battery replacement great
Why did you even put a Tin backsplash in such a small kitchen?
This would be nice if it could have rechargable batteries in it.….. That would make it pretty well ideal.
I like the idea of this as it keeps the existing hardware on the outside of the door original, which makes it good for apartment buildings where having a change of hardware on the outside is not really possible.
Expensive… Yes and no. It is more expensive than past locks, but you don’t have to buy the connect bridge, so that balances the cost.….
Just an FYI, you can buy rechargeable batteries, that’s what I use, I’ve bought four of them and I switch and charge them two at a time 🙂
After I read the review for this “smart lock” , I am not going to get one, it is over price for the design, material, and the way of operation , some review said the materials wear out easily, battery has to change every 3 months, not reliable at all. Never mind
So does it use physical keys if you want?
The only thing worse than the product is the customer service. If you’re outside North America I would look at other options. The battery life doesn’t live anywhere near up to what’s advertised and the customer service is infruating. The internet is littered with complaints and issues about the battery life and the company seems in denial. There answer was to offer to sell me more product at a discount as a potential remedy! Thanks, but no thanks.
Comments I’ve seen elsewhere about the gen 4 is the batteries don’t last long, more like 30–60 days and they are very expensive. Economically, it’s much better to have the Gen 3 with bridge.
I LOVE HAVING TO REPLACE THE BATTERIES EVERY 2 WEEKS.…..SO MUCH FUN. WTF HOW MUCH MONEY IS THIS GONNA COST MONTHLY IN BATTERIES??
