On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Over 800 sailors were stranded on the open sea, facing devastating conditions and hungry sharks. Only 316 sailors were rescued. The final resting place of the ship was a mystery — until 70 years later, in this episode of History’s Greatest Mysteries: Solved, a new History digital original series. #HistorysGreatestMysteriesSolved

The person that thought he should be court martialed should have faced trial for murder
It was a 12 year old boy, who brought the truth just from hearing the story from jaws!! The book is called, left for dead!!
The wreck of the Indianapolis was discovered 18,000 feet below the Philippine Sea. The deepest shipwreck found so far was the destroyer escort Samuel Roberts at 22,900 feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea. The deepest part of the Philippine Sea is 34,400 feet. Titanic, by comparison, lies 12,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
Anyone else bothered by the incredibly inaccurate photos and film footage they used?
Tim mc Vey got em back
Was it normal back then for ships to disappear for 4 days without somebody thinking there was a problem? 😳
Oh, c’mon! One of the clips in this video (at 2:06) is of the island of the nuclear carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), that wasn’t built till long after WWII was over. Then the rescue plane shown at 4:21, isn’t even an American PV‑1 Ventura plane, it’s a British Warplane.
Lawrence is awesome. I thought the point was that he actually narrates everything.
That’s the wreck of titanic mann
That footage of the wreck you guys used was NOT the Indianapolis’s wreck! The wreck footage you were using was footage of the Titanic’s wreck.
How you gonna host a show and not narrate Morpheus?
wow all the battleship footage is the Bismarck or tirpitz at the 3:02 mark etc, still the most saddest story’s i have herd of lost at sea tragedies and god bless Capital Mcvay and all those who lost their lives those 5 days at sea after she went down?
To think he still commanded his men and made sure that they could stay alive as much as his words could say ‚plus the dr as well who saved two men by swimming out to them when they were trying to swim away due to suffering hallucinations due to drinking salt water?
laurence: greatest mysteries
me: take it away morpheus
Just going to clear this up right now. The Indianapolis was not a Flag ship when she foundered, and most certainly not the flagship of the 5th fleet. The Flagship for Task Force 54 was the Tennesee and Old Dreadnaught.
He should have zigzagged. If he was torpedoed, there would have been no court martial.
‘There is nothign to worry about’ — History’s famous last words throughout time.
It seems all too coincidental. The exact ship carrying components for the atomic bomb ends up being sunk? Prior to that the captain requested a escort for a legitimate safety concern and he was denied? I bet a higher up in the navy was a spy and knew this would happen.
So this is monitized and they say suicide and many other words that get other useres demonitized…that seems totally fair
Becareful that some company in Asia might find and steal the metal from that sunken ship and of the many ships that are sunk
The Navy has no problem looking for a scapegoat when the screwup was actually higher up the food chain. Fortunately Nimitz knew what was going on and did not allow the court martial to stand, but it did ruin Mc Vay’s career.
Hey it’s the Laurence Fishburne!
The true monsters of this story were not the sharks
God always evenly distributed his karma and so we can weep the darma
I knew this man,he was a actor
👍🇺🇸
Arizona is the largest loss of life in navy history not indy…indy is largest loss of life due to shark attack
Hashimoto was brought to testify against Mc vay
Unfortunately it´s not the biggest loss of men in naval history. Why do you guye always make it bigger?
Think of the Bsmarck, the Hood, the Scharnhorst etc.
I get you cannot reenact exactly what happened; but don’t show images of guys in rafts and boats with oars. These guys only had there kapok life jackets just floating directly in the open ocean.
Great job using wreck footage of the Titanic. Give me a break history channel.
Conspiracy theory. Why will a ship that size not be equipped with sonar and they refused them an escort
Nicholas cage made a movie about this
Let’s see Paul Allens expedition…
There’s always a scapegoat.
The US Navy has a long and storied history…..of scapegoating individuals for its failures 😢
United States Government CARES About their SOLDIERS especially using the Indianapolis Captain as a scapegoat for their incompetence
They wanted the Indianapolis sunk period ! It’s so obvious,
For me that story have a lot of fishy things. The boat was sunk by a submarine and after 4 days an airplane on a routine patrol found the soldiers floating in emergency rafts. What happened? Because if you lose communication with a vessel you start searching for it the same day, but the survivors were found by miracle by an airplane doing an routine patrol flight 🤔
Kinda looks like some video from the titanic being shown.
It was a terrible thing, on so many levels; but, like the Titanic; it’s been done to death. What about so many other ships whereas their crews suffered similar fates? ..like the USS Houston in 1942.
Lawrence fishburne wt a narrator☁️☁️⭐⭐⭐⭐
A tragic story. I hope they are all at peace in the halls of hero’s. Especially the skipper. You did all you could captain 💚🇬🇧
