Why isn’t her story taught in public schools?
Phillis is on of my favorite heroines of American History.
It didn’t stop with slavery. In the 30s when social security first came out African Americans were denied that service, and many other government services that were available to White citizens were not available to Black citizens .
Nothing’s changed its same way today
The first slaveowner on record in the US was black! Isn’t Black History Month great!?
Thank you for sharing. 🌹
I love Phyllis wheatley. She’s so sweet and awesome
I remember borrowing a bio of Wheatley from the school library in grade school. I was obsessed with biographies at the time. Never finished it after I accidentally flipped to the end of the book and glimpsed her and her baby’s tragic end. Still haunts me to this day.

My hometown middle school in bridgeville delaware was named after this woman in 2004–2005 im proud to say i was part of the first 8th grade class too attend this school..didnt even know the significance of what this woman meant too the world
She was captured by Africans that had been capturing Africans for thousands of years before the whites discovered Africa and started shopping at the slave trade store that was already there.
Thank you for sharing this
I get goose bumps. What AMERICA owes the AFRICAN community is so much that WHITE AMERICA would never in a thousand years be able to repay their debt. America was built on the back of slaves, of minorities and the oppressed.
How come this was only 5 minutes and it cut off
It’s a travesty there’s no great movie about this woman’s story.
That poem was beyond moving. I reminded me of the star spangled banner and I think, given the right tune, could be better.
“George Washington would not allow enslaved people join the continental army.” That’s totally not true, out of the state Massachusetts alone 2200 black males (slaves and freemen) joined the Continental Militia in 1775.
