There are headphones, and then there are headphones that leave your ears open to hearing the world around you. If you want to listen to music or podcast and also want to stay safe on a bike, open ear headphones are the way to go. Dieter Bohn looks at five options, from the Aftershokz Aeropex to the Bose Sport Open Ear headphones to a Bluetooth bike helmet.

What’s your solution for audio when you need to hear the world around you?
I’ll transition into commuting with my bike next week so this video finally applies to me! 😀
Why r you riding a bike with mask on… you need those covid points.…. lol
I had a motorcycle helmet with similar features. It was great, but it’s obviously not useful except if you’re motorcycling.
Ive gt affordable open ear phones. Love them
Have you tried the headphones with pass thru? Like hearing aids. Sounds so good.
Caveat emptor. Do not purchase the Etude product. The device arrived with the right earpiece not working — which seems to be a common problem for this product — and customer service is unresponsive.
Bose Tempo r just.… bad.…. I’m actually returning mine today
Awesome vid! Might consider the aftershokz for walking. Live in a sketchy area so having open headphones would be nics
Thank you. I have to wear an open ear because my ear canals are too small for any of those available that go into the ear.
I bought the Shokz OpenRun Pro’s today at Best Buy after watching this review from you. So far I love everything about them! You sold me when you talked about people hating earbuds in their ears and these being perfect for not going in your ear.
As a avid road cyclist I LOVE THE AEROPEX🥰💙
Yes, not suitable for glass wearer. Normal earbuds is good enough for me.
I always used grado sr80’s while cycling, was perfect for me, great for classical music
Agree, love Shokz for cycling and general use. Another advantage is their 7–8 hour battery life so you can ride all day without recharge hassles
I wish the Oladance and Sony LinkBuds were included in this review
this guy is the Rick Bayless of technology
best headphone video ever made!
instead of these use sony linkbuds open back earphones
Try the Oladance Wearable Stereo!
For years I’ve preferred on ear not in ear headphones because I have itchy ears. Sticking anything in my ears makes the problem worse.
Great review, well thought out and produced. Sadly I am mainly focused on the fact that you are wearing a mask while riding a bike, alone and outdoors. Types of intelligences apparently do not cross over.
Why would you wear a mask while cycling???
wow you did exactly what i do. put on one side of earphones on my left side(we have right hand drive)
Oradance are the best
I want to see that “different video” regarding cycling in the city.
Truly said thank you 😊 ❤
I can’t take anyone wearing a mask on a bike in the woods seriously.
use head phones while riding if your crazy.
I wish they tested the open Sony linkbuds. They are a direct competitor to all of these with their open design that doesn’t go over the ear.
i have an ear issue, so i was hoping there was an earbud solution for that haha. headphones it is i guess!
I was under the assumption that anything that goes into the ear canal isn’t considered “open” (for example: the Galaxy Buds Plus)
1 ear bud?? Really thats an option? omfg i HAD NO IDEA!! dumbest comment EVER! Thisis why im not subbed to VERGE
Well, the issue for me is that my ENT is gonna confiscate my ears if I use earpuds.. I have issues with my ears and can’t have anything inside them, so I usually use headset.. But it’s big, clunky and singing its final song, so I’m looking for something smaller that won’t end up giving me two ear infections a year.. Also, it’d be nice to sleep with them..
The relevancy The Verge lost when this magician left. Damn.
Seemed it would be more on the uncomfortable side for eyeglass wearers 😮
I have 5 Ultimate Ears bluetooth speakers (2 Boom 3’s and 3 Megaboom’s) strategically mounted to my recumbent trike, its basically 4 channel stereo with a subwoofer. The sound is incredible, and I am still aware of my surroundings and can hear sirens, traffic, children, and barking dogs! I carry 2 Mophie Powerstation XL battery packs to supply the power necessary to drive the speakers, It’s freakin awesome!!
The sound quality of open headphones cannot match that of noise cancelling headphones. But they are safer, I think safety is more important. I think ear-hanging headphones have better fit because they have three support points: temples, auricles, and hindbrain.,they should be the best. I am currently using the Wissonly Hi Runner, which has a good fit, good sound quality, good waterproof (IPX8) and has MP3 mode (with 32GB storage)
why cant you switch the lenses in the Bose Frames
I liked the aeropex enough. Had a pair for about a year before they physically snapped on both sides. funny thing is they still kinda work but they look goofy as anything and are taped together with electric tape. I think the price is a bit much for something disposable, won’t buy again. currently using some tozo ‘air induction’ that sound better, way cheaper, but also have some cheaper annoyances. I think the aftershox were better made. That said, for something disposable, I’m not going to dump another $180 on them.
You dare call those tiny ears of yours ‘big’? Oh my small fella
Hard to believe anyone that wears a mask while outdoors and cycling.
My personal favorites that aren’t on this list are the Oladance OWS Pro
