Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Flip 3: Which one is right for you?

I’m excit­ed for the Z flip 3. I am cur­rent­ly using the first Z flip & con­sid­er­ing upgrading.

I pre-ordered the pink Z Flip3. Can’t wait to get it cause I luv the small form fac­tor, the col­ors and new design, and it flips which is so cool.

None… Way too much mon­ey to waste on fold­able phone… Maybe 2 — 3 yrs down the line things might get bet­ter and cost justified

Thank you for your hon­est review. I can­not afford a Z Fold so the Z Flip 3 is more than good enough for me. I charge my flip up to 85% only. That usu­al­ly lasts me 24 hours or more depend­ing on how much I use it. My Z Flip 3 is used for calls, text mes­sag­ing, IG, pho­tog­ra­phy and occa­sion­al googling dur­ing the day. At night, I turn it off and use my old Sam­sung S9, which is still going strong. I take good care of my flip hop­ing it will last for at least 3 years. 😅

I have had the Flip 3 since day one. I think this is an incred­i­ble phone for the RIGHT per­son. Like a lot of peo­ple, I failed to ask myself the exact ques­tion men­tioned in this review. What do you need from either of these phones? I didn’t and pay­ing the price for choos­ing poor­ly. I chose it for the wrong rea­sons and most of the rea­sons fad­ed after 30 days. I just ordered a Fold 3 and sell­ing my Flip 3. I am sure mileage is going to vary in my com­ments, so I hope some of this helps some­one somehow. 

Let me break down what I liked: 

1. The Flip 3 is a dynamo for its size. This will fit in places the Fold 3 can’t dare to tread. So if your thing is slim-fit euro jeans, meet your new phone.

2. Yes, clos­ing it after a call is cool. It’s com­plete­ly unnec­es­sary, but I dig it is pla­cat­ing to my old Razr nostalgia.

3. It’s got a lot to offer for its form fac­tor and that is the key. It does a great job for how small it Is. Is this an S21? No, it isn’t. Don’t try to make it one. It’s a fold­able phone, sorry.

4. Sam­sung has nev­er made a case I want­ed. The leather case for the Flip 3 is the best case I have had hands down. 

What I didn’t like: 

1. So again, its form fac­tor lim­its it a lot. The bat­tery is abysmal. The review­ers are dead on. If you are a supe­ruser, this phone is not for you. I am a supe­ruser after some self-real­iza­tion. I couldn’t get 6 hours of bat­tery life using at work and home with­out a charge. To be tied to a charg­ing brick for nor­mal use doesn’t work for me per­son­al­ly. For the phone to be dead in the morn­ing after for­get­ting to put it on the charg­er at night at 30 per­cent is a depen­den­cy, I don’t want all the time. I can’t log­i­cal­ly under­stand mak­ing a phone 120mhz refresh rate and then say­ing, “well low­er it to 60 to save the bat­tery” and get a sub-opti­mal expe­ri­ence on your brand-new phone. Own the real­i­ty of what the phone can do Sam­sung, don’t overextend.

2. The front screen. I want­ed to love it, accept it, and cham­pi­on it. I can’t. For me, noth­ing that front screen can do ever saved me from hav­ing to open the phone any­way. The more you must open it the more it defeats the pur­pose. Yes, Sam­sung says some­thing like 300K flips before the hinges break. Who knows if that will hold true? If I must open the phone to use it most of the time, all that cool­ness fades away. Again, I just speak for myself. 99 per­cent of the time what I need­ed to do; I couldn’t do on the front screen. Yes, it does have things a lot of peo­ple will like and will use. I need­ed way more func­tion­al­i­ty on that front screen. If you want to wait for updates on what the front screen can do (or mod it to accom­mo­date your use) this may not both­er you.

3. The cam­era. I am not a cam­era per­son. I thought the Flip 3 cam­era issues wouldn’t both­er me. It did and it does. When I can’t deposit a check online because I can’t get the image clear enough, hard stop and hard no. It wasn’t just this instance. Every pic­ture I took was abysmal. Yes, it’s not the s21. For those that can eek out decent pics, I applaud you. I couldn’t.

4. The crease. Yes, there is an argu­ment to be made of a hor­i­zon­tal crease ver­sus ver­ti­cal. The Flip 3 I think the crease comes way more into play. You won’t notice it visu­al­ly after a while. The feel will haunt you; it did me. You will not escape where it is and how it will affect day-to-day use. I had a hard time with the mid­dle where the crease is at. At times, I felt that cer­tain sites that had click­able what­ev­er where that crease was at did not func­tion. In addi­tion, even the sides of the Flip 3 caused me issues for the same rea­son. I had to resize or shift to land­scape mode to get a func­tion­ing app or site. 

So you Flip 3 fans out there, I salute you and under­stand your rea­sons. You made it work and I appre­ci­ate that. Mov­ing to the Fold 3 and pray­ing I get a bet­ter expe­ri­ence. Ask the hard ques­tions guys. Don’t make the same mis­take I did.
