More and more phone manufacturers are turning to under-display cameras as a way to eliminate bezels or notches. But these cameras, still in their infancy, come with their own drawbacks. Mainly… they’re not very good. But as the technology improves, do under-display cameras have what it takes to become the new standard? We spoke with Steven Bathiche, the head of Microsoft’s Applied Sciences group, to get a better understanding of the technology, its shortcomings, and whether under-display cameras have a place in the future of phone technology… or are better off in other industries entirely.

Are under-display cameras worth the compromise?
Somebody who willingly takes selfies doesn’t care about their quality.
I don’t care about selfie quality.
I just need a decent camera quality.
So that’s great for me.
“the area covering the camera even more distracting than having a notch“
this is stupid, i mean you dont even know what part of the screen behind the notch is.
Samsung should just make two versions, one without the stupid cut out (meaning no selfie camera) and one with. They could honestly charge me extra for a missing feature and I wouldn’t care.
ss note 9 is best. area above the display is for proximity sensor, face detection, and led notification. the only weakness of this phone is display and battery issue
asus rog phone 5 with small bezels
one solution maybe if dislay maker manage to make larger thine and trensprant image sencer uppr the display it capture more light and softwere manage marge to make good image. may be it can be
absolutely no one complained about traditional selfie cameras above the screen. zero need for those phone manufacturer idiots to invent pinhole, notch, or this under display camera. PLEASE I JUST WANT A NORMAL GOOD PHONE WITH A FULL RECTANGULAR SCREEN I CAN LOOK TO!!!
Just bring back bezels, they weren’t even that big when done right. Ugh.
Since most phones have a chin anyways, why not stick with small bezels at the top and bottom ?
2mm would probably be enough to house a selfie camera and with a prism and a lens one could even do wide angle 🤷♂️
Well I hate it because they force us if you don’t like the camera they make the screen smaller and this is stupid from Samsung we need we need to go back to the S9 put the camera where it needs to be away from the screen
Would be nice if the pixels of that area got turned off when the app of the camera was active.
Notch and punchhole are my biggest enemies. The reason why i don’t trade my 3 year old phone that comes with pop up camera.
why dont they turn the pixels ontop of the camera off when the user is using front facing camera? or when they take a picture using front face?.
This needs to be the breakout feature that’s PERFECTED for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
They could probably place the camera on the very edge of the device’s display and lower the resolution of the display in a semicircle on the edge itself to reduce the display quality reduction and improve the clarity of the photos!
Why not use some mini-prism system to guide the light around the screen and have the hole in the black bezel?
people care too much about the cameras on mobile devices, especially the selfie cameras i.e the front facing camera. the quality shown in this video is more than enough for those of us who aren’t wasting our days worrying about how we look.
