I’m a student without money, renting an apartment
First the pros. Because I like this concept. It’s a better way forward. Sure, it’s going to be less efficient, but it can make up for that with more surface area, so it mostly washes*. It’s easy to replace damaged panels. It’s safer for your roof. It’s nicer looking.
Now the cons. *= Cost. Cost was clearly not addressed here, yet that’s the largest impediment to solar. To be fair, that’s really a problem for government. We want a greener future, yet subsidizing solar is being handled so very poorly. Manufacturing processes can only lower cost so far. My other concern is actually rain. Shingles are supposed to be staggered to NOT create clean channels for water to seep in. Whereas this install REQUIRES lining up every shingle perfectly. Can it really handle that? Only long-term testing will say. And then there’s the issue of cooling for efficiency and longevity, which seems to be not addressed at all. Which could be easily solved with an additional water-heating layer, a part of solar that is very neglected.
In theory, I love this idea! <3 I hope it’s the future of solar. But I have a sinking feeling that they’ll need to devise a system to stagger shingles to prevent long-term problems. And government really needs to step up subsidizing the costs of solar and ensuring that their efforts go to helping the end-consumer, not the predatory companies overcharging and under-delivering on their false promises to profit. If government is going to push that everyone drive an electric car, government needs to make sure people can actually charge their electric cars, at home, with slower more efficient charging cycles that don’t put pressure on the grid. Government should also be subsidizing insulation upgrades if we’re going to save the world from the evils of carbon, but that’s a whole other topic.
Hm. Sounds good. Maybe a little TOO good.
It’s far less aesthetics that cause people to be reluctant to install solar panels on their roofs, it’s the cost. I had it costed out for our 3,300 sq ft colonial, and it was going to take 20 years to break even. Since we are going to sell our house and downsize in the near future, we would effectively lose whatever we hadn’t recovered at the time of sale and have to pay lumpsum back to the solar company. If panels can be made to replace shingles and do it with only a modest cost penalty, that would be the optimal solution provided their life was the same or better.
I just spent 11,000$ on a roof, guarenteed to last 30 years„ it better last, cause I’m 75 and the race is on!!! how’s that for an excuse????????
Good report thank you. Extremely interesting product.
Higher loss just to walk on it. You rarely need to walk on the roof so useless.
Still doesn’t avoid the problem of solar being a rip-off ohm’s law 102 he could only get about 10% of rated output
lol I still have one major “excuse” which these goons will never be able to overcome. I’m forced to rent and can’t qualify for owning a house anytime soon, or maybe even ever..
Seems a loss loss situation here. To compete with other solar panels you need more solar panels from GAF, more cost. No cooling under the panels, more panels needed to compete with other solar panels, more cost. Only advantage to this system is the aesthetics. So, CNET, what are the long term results of the product’s tests? None? So the life expectancy of this product is only speculative.
6:05 all of those “benefits” favor the conventional solar panel over this product.
im sorry and i know they might be able to take the weight but why is this man standing on the panel? 0:05
One more thing for the roofer to screw up.
Will they install your solar panels like they install insulation?
Home owner — “Hey can you guys put some insulation in my roof while you have the decking off?“
Roofing contractor — “Sure, no problem.” Opens up roof, throws in a bundled bale of insulation, and closes the roof without ever “installing” the insulation.
Neighbors — “Hey, nice solar roof, have you noticed any difference in your electric bill?“
Home owner — “No, not at all, and my heating and cooling bills are still high!”
Tesla completed my solar roof in one 8 hour day start to finish.
I compare to my panels put on a trailer, able to rotate on the trailer with the sun,don t want on roof, thank you.
This is a good step. Keep up the research.
I was recently informed by a GAF solar shingle installer that I must have my entire roof shingled when this product is used or else GAF could not offer a warranty.
This was a problem for me because only 6 months ago I had one side of my house re-roofed (Owens-Corning) due to leaks, but now that I am ready for solar I would be required to re-roof that side again — only this time with GAF — before I could get a warranty with the GAF solar shingles. It’s all-or-nothing with GAF.
Can’t believe they didn’t show a finished roof with this product. If the roof is filled with things like at 7:45 then it could be really ugly and a lot of the argument for this approach seemed to be that it’s just like regular roofing. We really don’t know that without seeing the finished product though.
Id rather have panels on rails it will stay more cooler with airflow and be more efficent
I like where they’re going with this technology. Looking forward to future designs with integrated seamless connectors.
Solar is still inefficient trash that has som3 30–50 years of improvements to be made before it becomes the average individual’s primary means of energy consumption.
Solar panel are a scam and not an answer to global warmer or planet saving nothing solar panel DO NOT BREAK DOWN .…EVER so they can’t be 100% recycled and leave toxic breakdown worse then nuclear waste
I’m sure everyone buying these knows that after the panels get replaced they are shipped to poor African villages to be taken apart and these poor peoples drinking water is poisoned.
Ground mount is the way to go if you’ve got the space
Solar tech is advancing inch by inch. I hope to see some real world numbers on these in the future because they look promising.
I like this system but think the rack system that allows airflow under the panels help keep the building and the panels cooler. The panels provide a shade for the roof and will decrease the inside temperature. Same affect as setting under a shade in the direct sunlight.
I haven’t read all the comments, so I don’t know if anyone has brought up the question of which nd. What would happen when a hurricane comes through with 100+ mph winds? I’ve seen asphalt, slate, and clay shingles tipped up and blown/broken off in such conditions. I didn’t see any kind of fastening on the downhill side of these panels; how susceptible are they to this effect?
I like the idea but I prefer to have my own battery bank and not be tied to the grid.…
No mention of how much electricity these shingles will produce just how they are easy to install. What happens when the roof needs to be replaced do they just get scrapped like the rest of the shingles? There is no mention of how much money you can save on your electric bills or how long it takes to recover your costs. Are there any case studies that show actual results?
Video ends abruptly. Make sure to add outros to give people time to like and subscribe when they realize the video is wrapping up. Great video. I want to get these 😅
Looks GREAT, hopefully, they can get the cost down. DIY Cost?
what’s the cost per panel (not installed)?
Vans, this tech for vans.
As long as it’s not a lie, its everything Musk promised & he’s not involved! I love it!
Sounds like Mike Rowe
We have a business selling solar in USA, who can we contact for this if we want to sell they’re product to our clients?
I’m intetested
They will not sell to my city location…
You can’t get around the fact that rooftop solar ruins the roof. If the roof ever leaks your solar installers and roof installers will blame each other and you will be screwed. It only makes sense if the person installing the roof installs the solar and guarantees both for 30 years. But these solar companies haven’t even been around for 30 years so the warranty would always be sketchy.
The key question is efficiency. Would this generate less actually energy than solar panels of the same rated power?
But they aren’t less ugly
” this is purpose-built to be reliable for 25 plus years and to handle all the elemental conditions that a roof would need to be put through…“
What about Hail? Is there any warranty?
Wonderful innovation GAF! What is the wind rating on these?
They could easily incorporate these into building codes. Require every new home built to have enough solar to power the house plus 40%
