New Delhi: US-based chipmaker Qualcomm awards Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) an exclusive manufacturing agreement for the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 chips. Qualcomm contracted Samsung Foundry to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips, but an order for the upgraded version of the processor, dubbed Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, has been awarded to TSMC, GizmoChina reported on Thursday, citing a new report from the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
While details about the next-gen flagship smartphone processor remain unknown, the company will likely stick with the 4nm node process for the upcoming chips, which will also be used in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 series, the report said. Samsung’s yield issues are probably one of the main reasons Qualcomm decided to switch to TSMC. (Also Read: Gold Prices Rise Rs 200 Higher Again, Check Gold Prices In Your City)
According to the reports, the yield of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 manufactured by Samsung Foundry is 35 percent. This means that of the 100 pieces made, only 35 are useful and 65 are defective, the report said. (Also read: 7th CPC: BIG update on DA hike, Government announces DA hike THIS day)
The South Korean giant recently started producing 3nm chips. It uses Gate All Around (GAA) transistor architecture for energy-efficient and performance-enhanced chips. It is also developing a second-generation 3nm process node that would offer significant improvements in several areas.
