London: British actor of Indian descent Dev Patel has risked his life to stop a stabbing in Australia. The actor stepped in after witnessing an altercation between a man and woman outside a supermarket in Adelaide, reports Mirror.co.uk. As he attempted to stop the fight, the man involved was stabbed in the chest – although his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
An unidentified woman was arrested at the scene, local police said.
A spokesman for the 32-year-old actor said he acted on his “natural instinct” to try to “de-escalate” the dispute.
According to Mirror.co.uk, although he was praised by fans for his intervention, the star insisted there were “no heroes” in the situation.
In a statement, Dev’s spokesman said: “We can confirm that Dev Patel and his friends witnessed a violent altercation that was already underway outside a supermarket last night in Adelaide.
“Dev acted on his natural instinct to try to de-escalate the situation and end the fight.
“The group was fortunately successful and stayed on site to ensure the police and eventually the ambulance arrived.
“There are no heroes in this situation and unfortunately this particular incident highlights a larger systemic problem where marginalized members of society are not treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
“The hope is that the same level of media attention this story is getting (just because Dev was involved as a famous person) can be a catalyst for lawmakers to be compassionate when it comes to finding long-term solutions to.” helping not only those affected, but the community at large.”
Video from the crime scene showed the actor concerned speaking to police at the scene of the incident, which took place around 8:45 p.m. Monday night.
Officers have been called to reports of a man and woman fighting at a petrol station, South Australia Police said.
As witnesses, including Dev, tried to break up the fight, the woman allegedly stabbed the man in the chest. A 32-year-old man was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital in Adelaide.
The British actor, who was born in Harrow, west London and rose to fame as a teenager with the drama Skins, now lives in Adelaide with his girlfriend Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who is Australian. The actors first met on the set of Hotel Mumbai in 2016.
