A heated argument between the Haryana Women’s Commission chairwoman and a police officer on Friday took an ugly turn and escalated into rough language in front of cameras.
At a meeting in Haryana’s Kaithal, which included a discussion of a case involving a marital dispute, an angry Renu Bhatia, head of the Women’s Committee, was seen yelling at a police officer.
A video of the exchange, captured by a local journalist, showed Ms Bhatia saying: ‘You could have hit him? Had checked the girl three times. Out! I don’t want to hear anything.”
In response to protests from the police officer, she said, “SHO, take her outside.
The bitter argument continued until the officer was physically removed from the room by a colleague.
“We don’t come here to be insulted,” she is heard saying towards the end, while Ms. Bhatia says, “So you come here to have the girl insulted?”
The dispute apparently began over the police officer’s handling of a dispute between a husband and wife.
“We have a case with a married couple. The husband behaved badly towards members of the commission and the police on several occasions. The man wanted to leave the woman because he didn’t think she was ‘physically fit,'” Ms Bhatia later told the media.
“So we ordered medical tests for both of them. And while the woman was tested three times, the man refused to be tested. The investigator didn’t make it either. So we ordered a departmental investigation into her,” she added.
The police have not yet commented on the allegations against them.
