The long-awaited episode of Coffee with Karan finally aired on Wednesday and we have to say it was exactly what we expected. Gauri Khan, Maheep Kapoor and Bhavana Pandey sat on the coffee couch. The trio spoke about their three-decade friendship, their jobs, equations with their families, success, failure and more. If you have seen Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, You must know by now that Gauri, Maheep and Bhavana have been friends for more than 30 years. Like any other relationship, they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs. When asked by host Karan Johar about their “friendship for almost three decades” and how it’s still going strong, Gauri Khan laughed and said: “We’ve had a lot of fights to be honest. Let’s not paint that rosy picture.” Bhavana Pandey added, “We’ve had our ups and downs.”
Karan Johar also highlighted how they had “individual issues” with each other but always reconciled and grew closer as the year progressed. Maheep Kapoor said, “We’ve had a lot of struggles, but that’s it.” Then Bhavana added, “We’ve had a lot of great times too, and we’ve all been there for each other even in our difficult times. I think that’s what made us last.” According to Maheep and Gauri, “catfights” are important.
Maheep Kapoor and Bhavana Pandey then revealed that people think they are friends with Gauri because she is superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s wife. It all started with Karan Johar setting his own example of being called a “follower” of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan. He asked Maheep and Bhavana to share their experiences. Maheep said she faced it “all the time.” She added: “There were times when people said she gets noticed because she’s friends with Gauri Khan. But you know, three decades, 100 struggles, 100 problems, hard times, bad times, you can’t fake that.” Of the bond the three share, Maheep said, “We’ve gone through milestones in life. You can’t fake these things.”
Bhavana Pandey agreed with Maheep Kapoor. She also recalled the time Gauri Khan asked her to come to a tea party. “To be honest I found it really warm and welcoming from her. I didn’t know anyone. The tea party was wonderful,” she said.
Gauri Khan, Maheep Kapoor and Bhavana Pandey also revealed how their families have sailed through tough times when things didn’t go their way.
Karan Johar then wanted to hear Gauri Khan’s perspective on how she reacted to Shah Rukh Khan’s success when things didn’t go as planned for Chunky Panday and Sanjay Kapoor. Gauri said: “For me, success is immaterial. Of course we love it, we all enjoy it. We have all been a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s success and we are grateful to God. But on a day-to-day basis, I really don’t think that much about success and failure and my surroundings. What all my friends are going through. Because I don’t give it [success] so much meaning.” Gauri added that she “appreciates people for their presence when they are with me and I enjoy the moment with them.”
Gauri Khan said that she doesn’t think she is that person who always thinks about success and failure. This is where Bhavana Pandey stepped in, adding: “We have all enjoyed Shah Rukh Khan’s success with her.” Maheep Kapoor, who herself comes from a family of stars, mentioned that “not everything or everyone can be a Shah Rukh Khan”.
Maheep Kapoor also revealed that her husband Sanjay Kapoor was unemployed for many years, which is why “money was tight” at the time. “There were times when Sanjay sat at home unemployed for years. Money was tight. My kids grew up with it, along with the glamor and glitz. People around me sometimes made me feel like we were the failed wing of the Kapoor family,” she said.
Also Bhavana Pandey spoke about Chunky Panday who walked away from fame after her marriage. “I think marrying Chunky was a big deal in itself because I married a movie star who was known around the world… He was such an amazing person, especially at home. (For) success, frankly, by the time I married him he had kind of strayed from being the main man. Well, I didn’t really see that superstar status, but of course I knew him to be a very popular actor and a very beloved actor. What I saw at home is that he had many friends. He had great connections in the industry…so I really didn’t feel that. It was never the main thing in my life,” said Bhavana.
For Gauri Khan, who is an interior designer, the label of being the wife of a superstar was not always welcome and has worked against her in her profession “50 percent of the time”. But she described Shah Rukh Khan as a “humble” and down to earth person who is “at ease” with those around him. We all agree, Gauri.
