Babli Bouncer is Madhur Bhandarkar’s first film after a break of almost five years. The film stars Tamannaah Bhatia and focuses on romantic comedy, which is considered to be the actress’ best performance of her career. Madhur Bhandarkar’s last film Indu Sarkar was released in the second half of 2017. What has kept him away from films all these years? He told Hindustan Times exclusively, “I do all kinds of films.” Also read: Madhur Bhandarkar on Casting Tamannaah in Babli Bouncer: ‘People will ask where she’s been all this time’
“After 2017 I worked on a total of 3 themes including Babli Bouncer. It took 3 years to write – a badass female-centric film, a larger than life cop action drama and Babli Bouncer. Normally people jump from one film to another, but I wanted to put my time into writing. When things were finalized for Babli Bouncers, we started thinking about the casting. In between, Corona came to India. Two years have passed. We were just sitting idly. I also did India Lockdown which will be released soon,” he explained of the trip.
While there has been much talk about Bollywood’s box office slump at the moment, Madhur Bhandarkar believes it is just a phase. Like many, he relies on the cinema. Referring to his experience, he added: “If the film industry suffers, we will suffer. This year, only films like RRR, Pushpa, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and The Kashmir Files did wonders at the box office. They were a smash hit. So this is wrong that movies don’t work. The magic of cinema will never go away.” But the question remains, why do certain films, despite their magnum opus feel, still fail at the box office? He believes the content has changed. “The audience is now watching so many types of content on OTT platforms. The standard has gotten higher. But my gut feeling is that they will run parallel.”
Alongside Babli Bouncer, Madhur Bhandarkar also has India Lockdown which depicts the raw, gruesome story of Indians during India’s first lockdown due to Covid-19 in 2020. Before he announces the release date, reports have suggested he’s likely reuniting with his fashion star Kangana Ranaut for an untitled project. He denied: “Nothing as such is happening at the moment. Kangana is a very talented actress. We meet and talk. My focus is only on Babli Bouncer. Followed by the lockdown of India.”
