But the mandate allows for a new standard to be adopted, so that’s not an issue
They just said they would comply — it can mean they might just remove the charging port 💀
I still really hope they “comply” by removing the charging port altogether and switch to wireless only charging since it’s so common these days
I don’t mind Apple create another type of USB but lightning USB has been over 10 years and still has the same exact old specs as when it initially introduced. Apple cannot blame EU lawmakers for making such decision. They were forced to do so because Apple hasn’t actually improved it and still using it instead of USB C. If I have to pick one, I would say it is Apple’s fault for either extremely slow at innovating or refuse to do so due to pure greed.
This is a misinformed opinion. In the legislation there is the explicit provision to update accordingly with the international standard. As a tech journalist you should know it very well, while instead you’re spreading misinformation.
USB‑C is already the standard and apple is the only one who doesn’t seem to be following it. The difference with micro USB is that it was competing with a number of other standards at the time, USB‑C became the clear winner.
The standard is not decided by the EU. All the manufactures just have to agree on which port is used which is decided by a committee which all manufacturers are part of. So if they want to switch to a new standard, they just have to agree in the committee which was what they did with micro usb and then usb c. Apple was a big part of designing usb c until they pulled out and created their own standard to get greater profits
Yeah, doesn’t sound too good when the State tells private companies how to design their own products, instead of free market forces. I mean, as long as said products aren’t breaking the law of civility and morality, why should the State feel the need to mess with private creativity?
This did happen with micro USB. That’s why we had micro USB before everyone solidified on micro USB. It was a nightmare of different barrel plugs and occasionally mini USB
Apple has shown time and time again that they will be as anti-consumer as they are allowed to be. They only respond to the stick.
Imagine they box a lightning cable and sell a lightning to usb C adapter 😅😅
The hardware is always regulated by the government. If you have a private car on your private company doesn’t mean you can run over people with it. Apple can use as much Lightning as he wishes indoors but not sell it in public. They are not forbidden to do that.
The mandate keeps open the possibility for the standard to grow and upgrade, so the “hurts innovation” point is decidedly debunked and false
Do not bring in this BS you get paid by Apple to say. “Government mixes in slippery slope” apple has almost for every product a different charger you have to carty all of them with you, while on Non apple products USB‑C and just top two cables. So tell me where was this a bad Idea, because every Product that apple makes is designed so they can squeeze all of the Money out of you, for a charger brick, foe a cable to charge a pen on an Ipad and so forth. It was high time someone started to hand out some rules, so people don’t pay money for all an everything.
Quels sont les avantages technologiques d’un lightning versus l’USB‑C
The EU already mentioned that any new better tech introduced will be a new standard.. so it’ll evolve
How about all European, American, Chinese and more electrical plugs that has been plaging us long before the lightning cable?
They can still make their shitty chargers, but if they want to sell in EU they can’t scam us no more. Besides Apple sucks😊
Thanks to USB‑C my portable charger is no longer working since it sucks power out of my phone’s battery. Apple you might wanna fix this fast
Don’t worry the lightning cable will come back do to problems in the U.S. and other countries and apple plans to go back to the OG lightning cable
