I’m surprised the modem chip stuff has taken so long. I’m pretty sure they bought Intel modems a few years ago. Right around when Apple and Qualcomm had that little tiff.

There is NOTHING good about non-standard parts for the user. This is only a bad thing. Apple is doing it to be able to make the pricing of their devices more opaque, and have more control over repairs. There is no customer focused reason.

Apple only want to design their own items so third parties won’t be able to supply cheap parts for repairs. It seems like they are still heading further down the anti third party repair road.

This is not necessarily ideal if you are a Right to Repair advocate since now Apple is going to have full control of their parts and I doubt that they will source them to independent repair shops.

Another factor in all this is no doubt the licensing fees and patent disputes that Apple has been facing — develop the tech in house and all that goes away. As do the profits of Qualcomm and Broadcom. 😂

One major point needs to be made: Apple has never made anything.
Absolutely everything from them is made up of components made by others. Some of those are designed by Apple and made to spec, like enclosures.
That’s the way most stuff is made.
But there’s never been an Apple “factory”.

Apple is truly “one step ahead” Right to Repair…
Such a concentration of production in “one hands” will give all the control over repair capabilities… That should be banned by antitrust law.
7:07 “So at the end of the day, who does this affect the most?” — consumer, that’s who gets screwed up.

Most of this they’re not really doing in the name of performance efficiency per se, but profitability. Micro LED is an innovation, sure, but also probably dead in the water.

You and Mrwhostheboss should make your own phones. The pair of you could take over the phone world and make it so a five year old can fix it. I have faith in you two gentlemen. go on at least think about it. You both young enough to have a go.

If Apple made every part of the iPhone without third parties like its own M processors, I would expect 20 hours of battery life.

Manufacturers that make screens for apple follow apple specification. That is why you can’t tell the difference between a BoE/Samsung/LG iPhone, because they are virtually the same. The difference probably is cost, driven by yields.
