Favorite thing to look forward all week is my Friday Morning Vergecast
24:13 I completely understand the apprehension about meta-users coming into Mastodon. I remember when Instagram brought all the Facebook users onboard my Instagram feed, which was once a haven for all my friends and family photos, pictures of vacations, outings, and pets, became this cesspool of stupid memes, which were the reason why I left Facebook to begin with. It kinda ruined Instagram for me….but, did it, though? I mean, I still use it a lot. It’s my wife’s favorite way to send me memes of all the shows we watch together, so, I guess it’s all fine? Whatever that means in 2023. I think it means, these companies and services will never be what we want them to be, and, even when they are…they really aren’t
Did you guys actually use the Pixel Tablet before talking about it? I have it in my Kitchen.… User switching is very fast.
9:35 Bing Chat says it’s ‘remorse’.
I’d like to congratulate Elon Musk on finding a way to make me support Zuck in anything. That anything being to pummel Elon Musk.….
In the beginning of the Meta vs the Fediverse segment someone said something like “what is the point of open source if you’re not open?”. Open Source is just a licensing model. That’s all. It has absolutely nothing to do with having to be welcoming newcomers to your club, or anything else. It is a licensing model, nothing else.
Sorry, David, but your take on Mastodon is a crock.
I have listened to almost every episode since the beginning and the whole segment about the fediverse was the most tone deaf segment I have ever heard here. Each of you completely ignored any concerns regarding data privacy and the integration of Meta/Facebook into the fediverse. It’s not about nerds wanting to keep people out, it’s about keeping Zuck out of their lives.
1:11:42 Ok Nilay, as someone who finally signed up for a Voxmedia account just to pillory you for the Gary V interview… I think this is a fair mea culpa and gives a much better framing retroactively than what we got. I believe what you say. Though if Vaynermedia is actually legit, and not just a piece of Gary’s self-aggrandising spin, it makes it all the more confusing why he feels so compelled to be so loudly and publicly insufferable — to the point it takes active time and attention to weed him (along with other overly-online, obnoxious, megarich sociopaths) out of my feeds and out of my attention. Without that context you shared on this pod, it felt like an intrusion. I listen to Decoder on Spotify, so when his name and face popped up on my google nest while playing nursery rhymes for my son, it was a genuinely unwelcome moment of cognitive dissonance. Thanks for listening to the reaction from listeners and trying to understand where we’re coming from.
This is the best episode right now!!! Enjoyed the laughs from my old friends (lol)

Hey David, Moment has an iPad Dock, launched in collaboration with Sara Dietchy, for your docking needs.
Unfortunately that too does not use the pogo pins. You could definitely ask Sara and Moment as to why.
7:25 where’s the link?
Tbh, not having to be in the same network with some of the most sanctimonious people online that are now on Mastodon doesn’t sound that bad.
Thank you for the Instagram 2X call out lol. Is there any other company in history that has been as obstinate in its refusal to make an iPad app?
Alex totally has that midea U‑shaped AC. That thing’s IoT interface literally does not work lol.
You can always tell that David doesn’t actually use Mastodon.
Loving the return to video. I still listen on Spotify because it’s easier in the car, but Spotify doesn’t have comments… So here I am 🙂
@reckless1280 you’ve mentioned “the end of the social internet” a fair amount in the last few weeks and months. I don’t disagree with the sentiment, with all that’s happening on Reddit and the Fediverse and Activitypub, etc. But this week it was in the title of the podcast! And in your interview for (ssh) Decoder. I’ve been a fan & follower of the verge for the better part of a decade as it’s obviously grown in size and influence. By reporting on this “end of the social web as we know it” heavily, do you think you’ll affect public opinion and accelerate it in one form or another?
Heh. Kind of hilarious that Threads isn’t even allowed to launch in the EU because its privacy practices are so abhorrent…
11:37 I don’t understand at all. Mastodon and other fediverse apps are welcoming new people every day. I’m sure there are some people who are like that, but it is wrong to assume that the entire social network is like that. I found it very welcoming and inviting
Mysoginy in the Verge goes BRRRR
