Why Does the M2 Mac Pro Exist?

In a world where you can get the exact same performance from a computer half the price… what’s the point?

Maybe the M3 will have a calculator
Those people walking in the background are certainly kicking in my OCD 😬
How would you know?
It would be cool if they brought back the trashcan Mac Pro, I think it would work well with Apple Silicon
One area where GPUs might still be used in the expansion slots is for AI development.
Seeing the magic mouse repeatedly really got on my nerves
Fans ramp up because it thinks it’s lost its flow. Gotta keep the Chernobyl processor from going critical!!!!
Thank you!
Thanks for pointing out reasons for this machine. Too many people are assuming that their needs are the only ones that exist.
I’d be very surprised if there isn’t eventually an M3 Extreme or the like. Seems like all these Apple Silicon chips, while insanely impressive (typing this on an M1 Pro 16″), are still portable first designs, which makes sense since they’re gonna sell way more notebooks than desktops, and the advantages of Apple Silicon are much more evident on notebooks.
But c’mon, I wanna see a chip designed from the ground up for the desk that pulls like 150+w from the wall and just rips. I feel like they gotta be aiming for that eventually. There was a rumor floating around saying that was the original intent for the new Mac Pro, but it didn’t pan out for whatever reason.
Seven PCI Express expansion slots (six available slots; one slot with Apple I/O card installed)
I do wonder, does Apple have what it takes to compete in the workstation market anymore? It used to be that you could load up a Mac Pro with the top tier CPUs and highest end graphics cards and put as much RAM in there as would fit and call it a day. Now they have absolutely nothing to compete with modern AMD workstations on a pure horsepower basis. Don’t get me wrong, it’s extremely impressive that they basically packed an R9 5950X + decent GPU into that little package, but that’s last generation’s, non-workstation flagship. It wouldn’t stand a chance against the 32-core or 64-core models of either generation. I know this sounds like a deranged PC fanboy take, but raw performance and modularity were kinda the point of the Mac Pro historically.
It exists to soon be e‑waste because of all this planned obsolescence. Lol you can’t even upgrade the ram
Great video. “Most people” didn’t need the previous Mac Pro. It’s ALWAYS been a niche product. The “who is this for” question that seems to baffle your viewers is mostly pot stirring nonsense by people who don’t even NEED the Mac Mini Pro. Apple understands their users and they know exactly who will need this.
Although it has PCI that can e used for an AVID HD card that still not a sound card but simply an accelerator card for DSP which are slowly becoming redundant in favour of AVID native being the natural way to go due to computing power these days and of cause people could still use the Mac Studio with PCI breakout box. Pretty sure this will be the last Mac Pro we will see unless they suddenly revert there current design of un upgradable approach with regards to memory cpu and HD there just going to be a waste of money and space.
I’m sorry… They’re PCI slots? Those look like PCIe slots to me.
I bet there won’t be another Mac Pro after this one. The Mac Pro was focused on modularity and stuff like heavily GPU-focused tasks and tasks that need extremely high levels of ECC memory. None of those apply to the M2 Ultra Mac Pro. In fact, I’m going to be this model will flop so hard (because Apple made it so poor, likely on purpose to make the Mac Studio look like a good deal) that Apple will kill it when the M3 Ultra comes out.
Apple is making big mistake by not working with nvidia. For anyone who’s working with 3D Models / Visuals buying a mac is just a mad idea.
I just can stand macOS. I’ve tried to like it. I just never did. So, their computers are not for me.
Shot in the dark: because it took longer than expected and they have a direct product cannibalising it, I’m going to assume that they did have a faster, bigger chip for it that they couldn’t get to work; this being their fallback.
I’m actually quite surprised that Apple haven’t looked into external PCIe 4 enclosures that connect over TB4 for the Mac Studio. Both PCIe 4x16 and TB4 have a max data rate of 32Gbps so any losses should be minimal. I’ve seen a few TB3 ones like eGPU enclosures…
…aaaand my brain just kicked in and realised that they’d prefer to make people pay the extra $$$ for the Mac Pro than give people a more flexible/cheaper alternative option.
The mac pro not supporting video cards with that many PCIE slots is just wild to me.. It makes an extremely niche product just even more niche. I feel that a lot of the ‘features’ here could just be replaced by a server, and then you use the mac studio if you really need to use apple silicon.
I love that you can stuff 64TB SSD PCIe card into the Mac Pro for expanded storage. …but what software can take advantage of 26,000MB/s?
Because you kept asking for it Marques
Crazy how Apple is still using PCI and not PCIe in 2023
