July 2023 was a month full of exciting tech news, from AI breakthroughs to streaming wars. Here are some of the highlights:
Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic formed the Frontier Model Forum, an industry body to promote responsible AI development and collaboration. The forum aims to address the challenges and opportunities of large-scale AI models.
EU opened an antitrust probe into Microsoft over Teams bundling, alleging that the company may have violated competition rules by pre-installing and integrating Teams into Windows. Microsoft said it will cooperate with the investigation.
Meta was fined AUD 20 million by Australia for undisclosed user data collection. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said that Meta failed to inform users about how their personal information was used for targeted advertising.
Apple was sued with over $1 billion lawsuit in UK for high prices of market apps. The claimants alleged that Apple abused its dominant position in the app store market by charging excessive fees and restricting competition.
NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service saw a surge in subscribers, thanks to live sports. The service added 9 million users in the second quarter, reaching 54 million sign-ups and 20 million monthly active accounts.
